THE BEGINNING OF THE END - Months after Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Enzo (Michael Malarkey) mysteriously vanished from the Armory vault, Stefan (Paul Wesley) tirelessly pushes forward with their search, while Bonnie (Kat Graham) struggles holding onto hope that they will be found. Meanwhile, a dangerous encounter with an unexpected visitor leaves Caroline (Candice King) and Alaric (Matt Davis) fearing that someone - or something - may be targeting their family. Finally, after following some mysterious clues, Stefan realizes that whatever has a hold of his brother may have a more damaging grip over him than he could have ever imagined. Episode 1:
Car on the road. A couple in it. She's complaining about seeing a superhero movie. He doesn't like her dystopian teen movies. He's happy the vampire craze is over. Swerves to avoid a man in the road. A body hits the windshield. They go check. Damon claps behind them. Enzo sits up on the road. Damon says it's a slow night. Enzo says maybe we let this one go. Couple asks what do you want? They need a ride.
Take the couple to a warehouse. We're slaves. We bring the worst of humanity here. Who is worst? She says she stole makeup once. Damon compels her to tell the truth. She slept with her best friend's boyfriend 8 times. The man sold a dying person's pain pills and sold them. Enzo feeds on the woman and carries her away. The man is for Damon to torture. Bodies hanging from the ceiling. Damon compels the man to stay calm. Man doesn't want to die. Damon doesn't want to kill. Sometimes we have to do what we don't like. Man asks what's down there? Damon says don't really know. He doesn't have a choice. He puts the man on a hook and drops him in the water/blood. He thrashes and begs for help. Something consumes him. Enzo proposes watching TV. Damon wants to read a while. Enzo says goodnight.
Stefan and Caroline in bed. Taking a moment of joy.
Bonnie's writing to Elena. Only one of us writes about our failure at a time. We're no closer to finding Damon and Enzo and who or what took them. Her guitar string breaks. She's crying. Remembering Enzo teaching her how to play. Memories of loving each other.
Stefan and Caroline dressing. She's complaining about the nanny. Hot nanny is getting sparkly with the girls' food. LOL. Ric is running the Armory. Stefan says maybe he's eating the sandwich crusts. She says we need to look out for Ric. Stefan's going to look at missing person reports again. She'll check with local affiliates. She leaves for work. Phone text. A body. She shows Stefan. Better than yesterday.
Ric on the phone with the girls. He asks for the nanny. Are you a doppelganger? LOL. He has to talk to an intern. Heh. Looking into the vault. Ric says it's a theoretical exercise. The chick blindfolds Ric. Come this way. Let your fingers do the walking. Find your way out. Ric feels the walls. What is this? A way out.
Enzo dumped the girl body. Damon's reading Fifty Shades of Gray. Enzo wonders how many bodies before this is over? Sorry, did we wake you? Damon says don't go out of your way to aggravate it. Enzo asks if he has any control left? He's holding on to a tiny shred of himself. Damon says nope, flipped the switch, on cruise control. Enzo yells at the pit. Damon says you should ask nicely. Enzo knocked in the bloody water. The thing grabs him. Then he's up. Damon asks get an answer?
(The chick from Warehouse 13 is one of Ric's interns.)
Stefan in the woods. With bonnie. Stefan still has hope. Bonnie is tired of being crushed by disappointment. Stefan says no one knows how to fight longer or harder or better than you. Please don't give up. She agrees. But....don't ask me to have hope. Hope hurts, and I don't want to hurt anymore.
Ric in the dark. The kids walk through the illusion. Where does the cave lead? They start walking.
WYET. Caroline has the kids. Nanny brought them. She leaves to grab a salad. Caroline puts in a video. Pete fixed the sound. Video of Enzo talking to Virginia St. John. She listens. And the sound goes on the fritz.
Ric's an academic geek only. Dad avoiding danger. Watch your step. He pulls rocks from a door. The door falls down. Cache of stuff. Geek gold mine.
Stefan and Bonnie arrive at the crime scene. Stefan compels a detective to tell what he knows. The woman pinned on the grill of the car. Bonnie says it's a guitar string. Stefan calls Caroline. She says a slaughterhouse with a drainage issue was closed recently. 3 miles from the crime scene.
She tries to play the video again and it's still broken. Nanny calls. Ric's phone is going to voicemail. Girls are playing hide and seek. Caroline calls Ric's office. Nanny heard the door open. She looks around. The front door blew open. Someone's in the house! Her neck is slit by Virginia!
Virginia upstairs with the knife. looking in the rooms. Caroline attacks her. Finds the girls. Stay here. She drags Virgina downstairs, then give blood to the nanny. She's saved.
The cave. Ric says it's all perfectly preserved. Except for a skeleton. Ric says don't touch anything. We have to seal the space. Georgie says his brain makes him super hot. He's flattered, but closed for business. Just a dad. She says she had to try. Intern says Caroline has been calling it's an emergency.
Stefan in the slaughterhouse. Bonnie at the scene still. Candle wax on the body. She's on her way to Stefan.
He's looking around. Damon? Stefan. Hello, brother. Face to face again. That's not a friendly expression on Damon's face.
Stefan asks what is all this? What are you doing? Damon says daily chores. Mopping the floor. Stefan asks what happened? What was in the vault? Damon says I'm killing bad people. Be proud of me. Go home, Stefan. Stefan figures he flipped the switch. Damon doesn't want it. Humanity can't save me from Hell. Fire and Brimstone Hell. I've seen it. Met it up close. It's beyond its reputation. Stefan says you're not making sense. Damon says leave. It doesn't want you, yet. Go and never come back. Stefan says not without you.
Caroline compels the nanny with full directions. Be gone at least 2 hours with the girls. Caroline wakes Virginia. Tied to a chair. 30 seconds to explain why you came after my kids. Go. Virginia says I told you not to open it. It has come for them! Caroline asks What is it? What does it want with my children? Virgina bites off and spits out her tongue!
Stefan trying to reason with Damon. Damon says there is no switch because there is no hope. Me and Elena have different paths. Elena's great beyond is decidedly happier than mine. For the last time, go. Stefan hurts Damon. He's down. Bonnie arrives. He tells her to get the car, it's not safe. She's not leaving without Enzo. Enzo punches Stefan. Damon has Bonnie.
Enzo says leave now before Damon is forced to do something no one will like. Stefan agrees. Damon releases Bonnie. Damon says you can't win. My life is over. It's been over since you took it from me. Stefan says let's get out of here.
Caroline and Ric cleaning up Virgina's death. Ric wonders if he should never leave the kids sides ever. He's too far away. Caroline says we can't live together. He says he didn't say she should stay. She says this is my childhood home. He says you should be happy. Go where you want to go. We can't escape this life, so shouldn't we at least live it right?
Bonnie says you haven't said a word. It's not Damon or Enzo, they're not in control. The clues....Enzo left them for me. He wanted us to find them. Next time we'll get them back. You were telling me to have hope. Stefan says he said it was my fault. This time, it feels like he may never forgive me. Maybe you were right this morning. She says no, you were. Take a minute, pull yourself together, and find your hope. She gets out of the car.
Bonnie in the cabin with the guitar again. Enzo reads to her in a memory. He says he'd never stop fighting to get back to her. She goes to the book. The wax in the ear. The body lashed to the car.
Damon with a man in an art gallery. Artist. Enzo in the background. Damon says there's no such thing as redemption. Once the Devil comes a calling, you're done. Enzo says not every victim needs a monologue. Damon says the red you used has a very familiar scent. Care to explain why you're painting with human blood and what you did with the person you got it from? Enzo walks him away. Damon asks how the hell did they find us? It can get in your head. Flip your switch. If you care for nothing, it can see nothing.
Stefan writes to Elena. I think I've lost him. I hope there's a sliver in his mind that's fighting for life.
Damon remembers finding Elena on the road. When he thought she was Katherine. He says I need you. I don't know how much longer I can fight.
Stefan won't give up, but hope hurts. Maybe tomorrow will be better. Caroline gets back. Bad day? He hugs her. She's been thinking....you alone in the big house. I wonder if you'd like someone else to fill it. Me, by the way. Living here, with you. I'm not trying to rush us, but... He kisses her. She grins and kisses him back.
Bonnie on the phone with Ric about the clues on the Sirens. You think Sirens could be real? Ric say every story has to start somewhere.
The artist is offered to the Siren.
Bonnie reading from the book. It's real. The bodies I saw, the clues, Enzo wants us to know. He wants us to help him fight it.
A woman gets out of the blood pool. Naked. Singing. Damon says I guess she finally had enough to eat.
Next week - Siren wants to have fun. Wants to know where Damon goes in his head.
