“Summer School, Chapter Four!”
THE DEVIL IN THE SHADOWS — As Pat (Luke Wilson) considers whether he should come clean to Courtney (Brec Bassinger) about Eclipso’s past, a surprise visit from Crock (Neil Hopkins) and Paula (Joy Osmanski) catches him and Barbara off guard. A tense run-in with The Shade (Jonathan Cake) provides Courtney with some valuable information. Finally, Cindy (Meg DeLacy) makes her move. Amy Smart, Yvette Monreal, Cameron Gellman, Anjelika Washington and Trae Romano also star. Lea Thompson directed the episode written by Taylor Steitz (#204). Original airdate 8/31/2021.
Episode 4:
The prison. Artemis visiting her dad. I can't stay in that foster home anymore. Tryouts are Wednesday. Big 10 scout will be there. Parents tell her she'll be great. She misses them. The family exchanges I love yous. She has to pass messages between her parents. The guard cuts the visit short, laughing at Artemis. There's always next week. And the next. And the next.
Beth wants her parents to go on a date to Blue Valley Putt-Putt but Mom says we're very busy. Maybe you and your friends can go. She leaves. Beth finds the goggles saying the JSA file on Eclipso is Confidential.
Barb up most of the night. Pat told her everything about the black diamond. Do we tell Courtney about the JSA and Eclipso? She comes in and asks what about Eclipso? She tells them the goggles warned Beth. The files are confidential and I couldn't find any in the basement. Who is Eclipso? Pat says the devil in the shadows. Imprisoned in the black diamond. Whoever has it has his powers. He can get in your head, make you see things not there. It drives people to do bad things to themselves and others. The longer Eclipso is active, the more powerful he becomes. She says the Shade is looking for the diamond - to do what? Courtney says Beth is on her way to the library. We won't rush in. I won't rush in, Mom. I promise. She leaves after says she loves them.
ISA. Cindy sitting with the diamond. She's still upset about her stepmother. She sees her mom. Her birth mother. I'm so sorry I let your father find you. Please, don't hurt me. She tells Eclipso to stop now! You wallow in pain over her. You must put the past behind you. She says don't ever do that again, or I'll throw this diamond in a volcano. He says he's only here to help. I only desire what you desire.
Truck stops. Foster mom and Artemis. I can't eat this! How hard is it to buy whey protein? Can I have money to buy a decent lunch? My trials are today. What am I supposed to do for fuel? The foster mom says that's your business. get out, I have a nail appointment to get to. Artemis goes on the field.
Mike on paper route. He stops at the stack of newspapers and reads the front page. Married felons break out of prison. He's right in front of Mike! They grab him. Don't try to run from us, because you can't. Good tip.
how can you not have acai or wheat grass? What about berries? Courtney offers her fruit as a peace offering. Artemis takes the apple. Thanks. Courtney's sorry about the situation. Artemis asks what situation? Courtney fumbles through explaining. Artemis insists her parents are innocent. We Crocks don't forgive and we don't forget. She crushes the apple and storms off.
Clocks ticking. Rick Tyler got another perfect score. I told you. I studied. Teacher apologizes for doubting him. He says it's what everyone does. It's okay.
Alone in the cafeteria. Boy eating lunch. Cindy says hi, Isaac. Yes, I'm back from my trip abroad. So nice to see you. I always admired your musical talents. I'm a big fan. I want to make new friends this summer. Do you want to be my friend? I know what you're going through with your mom dying in that awful hunting accident. I lost my parents, too. He asks how did your parents die? She says horribly.
Pat has a voice message from Mike. We're down at the Pit Stop and they want to talk. Pat hurries there. Mike's bike is outside. Pat searches. Employees only room. Padlock broken. Mike, you okay? He's fine. Crusher, what are you doing here? We. Pat says you break out and immediately come to your home town? She says we left a decoy trail of bread crumbs. Cops should be halfway to Miami by now. Our daughter has football tryouts today. Help us lay low until after tryouts and we'll break back into prison without incident. We can do this the old-fashioned way. Or we can be friends. Buds! You wouldn't want the world to know about your little robot, would ya? Pat says okay.....let's watch some football.
At the house. Barb asks Pat if he's lost his mind. The Crocks are in the living room. Barb really nervous. Pat and Crusher. If I were you, train Mike now. Pat would rather Mike stays out of it. Good luck with that.
Barb and Mrs. Crock. Sees the evidence in the kitchen of the fight.
Pat asks Crusher how's prison? He says the gym's great and I have visitation rights with the missus. He doesn't miss the ISA. Jordan was a few colors short of a rainbow. Pat asks about The Shade. Crusher hasn't seem him in years and is not a fan. Hey, wannna know about bad bag guys? I gotta tell you about what the Dragon King did to I always thought we'd be friends. Pat says you tried to kill me.
Barb offering refreshments. The missus says you let your children eat processed foods? They find common ground on head strong teenagers. And decide to drink coffee.
Yolanda working at the diner. Brings the order to her friends. She goofed on the milkshakes. They says it's okay. And start going over the research. The black diamond is friend Diablo Island. Which was taken off maps. No one ever came back. One tribe summoned an entity of vengeance against the other. Bruce Gordon discovered the island and probably found the diamond. He was the only person to ever return. There's no intel about him after. Yolanda has another order up. They'll split up to keep looking. Rick has to feed his dog. Rick orders a dozen cheeseburgers to go and some fries. Beth asks what kind of dog he got? A big one.
Cindy brings Isaac into the ISA. The Fiddler. She shows him the violin. He can't play that. She says you'll learn.
Courtney walking in town. Visits the House of Secrets. The shopkeeper asks how he can help. She asks for books about or by Bruce Gordon. He's not sure, but directs her over. The Shade says hello in the stacks. She looks for him. You want the black diamond so you can team up with Eclipso for something bad. He says that's the scope of your imagination? She says Brainwave and Icicle did. He doesn't want to be lumped in with them. He says but the greatest slight is assuming I'll team up with Eclipso. She says you killed Dr. Midnite. He calls her a poor deluded child. Don't you know there's a difference between bad and evil? He's never taken a life that didn't deserve it. Eclipso killed Dr. McNyder's 10 year old daughter. Shade plans to drop the diamond into the deepest, darkest part of the ocean so Eclipso never hurts anyone again. Why? Shade says living as long as I have, I'm bored. Leave this all to me. Then he fades away into the dark.
Courtney returns home and asks where's Pat?
The football game. Sit down, watch, stay quiet. Then you go back. No funny business. Your wife is lovely, by the way. Pat knows that. Sit! Game about to start. Artemis gets tackled in the first play. She's in her head. Her parents yell for her. We made it! We love you! She huddles and calls the next play. This time, she threw a 40 yard pass. Scout is intrigued.
Cindy arrives. Holds up the diamond. Sees Courtney arriving. Eclipso says Artemis Crock will be yours to use.
Courtney sees the Crocks with Pat. Artemis sees police targeting her parents and thinks they'll be shot. She rushes to save them and tackles Courtney. Then sees what's real. Her team pulls her off Courtney. Artemis asks Where'd they go? So confused. Cindy is pleased and leaves with an evil laugh.
**So much for the college scout picking her.
The Crocks tell Artemis they're not innocent. You're going to be the first female quarterback college history. Mom says you have a future now. We won't let anything get in the way of that. Including us. They says this has to be goodbye and hug her.
Courtney feels bad for them. Why didn't you tell me they were in town? Courtney says I would've listened. Did you know Eclipso killed Dr. McNyder's daughter? Pat says Rebecca was 10 years old. I didn't want to scare you? She asks for anything else to know. Pat wants to follow the Crocks back to prison.
Artemis is told with her temper, the recruiter can't have her represent their school. Cindy approaches and tells her she has a team she can join. One your parents were part of.
Barn asks Pat if he told Courtney everything. No. Do you think I should? She doesn't know. Paula didn't tell Artemis. Now she'll never be the same. Pat says if we tell Courtney, she'll never be the same, either. None of the kids will. So they agree to protect the kids from the truth.
Courtney dressed as Stargirl but the staff is trying to get her to study. It's past curfew. She says if Pat won't tell us, maybe the Shade will.
Beth working on getting past the firewall. Chuck asks if someone's out there? She says I can hear you. Who are you? It's me, your best friend, Beth Chapel! Why do you keep calling me Chuck? He says he's been lost for years. I've been trapped in the shadow- Are you the real Charles McNyder? He says the Shade- and the transmission stops.
Hello? Beth. Beth Chapel. Are you there? Hello....hello....hello? Charles walks in a realm of shadows.
