ALARIC AND JO’S BIG DAY — It’s Alaric (Matt Davis) and Jo’s (guest star Jodi Lyn O’Keefe) wedding day and Elena (Nina Dobrev) and Bonnie (Kat Graham) do their best to help a stressed out Jo with the last minute preparations. After uncovering some life-changing news that Damon (Ian Somerhalder) has been keeping from him, Stefan (Paul Wesley) takes his brother on a road trip to give him some perspective on his future with Elena. Elsewhere, when Caroline (Candice Accola) returns to Mystic Falls after dealing with the fallout of her humanity-free rampage, she begins making amends with her friends and comes to a realization about her and Stefan’s prospects of being together. Finally, when Bonnie begins having vivid nightmares that Lily (guest star Annie Wersching) is coming after her, she enlists Matt’s (Zach Roerig) help in taking Lily down. Episode 21:
Bonnie dreaming. She opens her eyes. Gets out of bed. Lily is behind her! I thought Stefan locked you in the cellar. He did. But you know what I want. Bonnie says there's no way. Lily says there's a loophole. Bonnie says I won't help you find it. Lily rushes her and Bonnie stabs her with a knife. She runs into Kai. No magic. How are you--? Bonnie wakes.
Elena says we have to get Jo. 10 hours to the wedding.
Jo's freaking out. Her shoes are missing. Bonnie suggests a locator spell to find them. Elena says don't panic. We have 8 hours. Here's orange juice. Elena answers Jo's phone. Danielle has the flu. The wedding coordinator. She's vomiting. Caroline says I'm pretty sure I'm better. Elena hugs her. Thank you for getting me back. Bonnie hugs Caroline. Caroline takes over and makes it all work.
Ric with Tyler and Matt. Got the rings and the vows. They tease him over shots. Caroline texts them with chores. Ric says it's karma. LOL.
Caroline with Elena. She's a little overprotective of Elena's new human fragility. Elena says it's nice to not-- have to wear a daylight ring all the time. Caroline apologizes for the hurtful things she said. Elena says I've wanted to be human from the day I became a vampire. Caroline's avoiding Stefan. He's.....complicated. Working her way up to that one. Elena says he's got his hands full with Damon. Who said he'd take the cure with me. Whoa, Damon Salvatore human? Maybe.
Damon and Stefan in the car. Where the hell are we going? Stefan says quality time. Here we are. Pulls into a driveway. Damon says get to the damn point. Stefan says this is a house I lived in when I tried to start over. Welcome to your suburban nightmare.
Enzo at the Salvatore house. I told Lily I'd visit. Bonnie keeps trying to shut the door on him. He brought a little comfort. Pass it on.
Lily is talking in the basement. She grabs Bonnie when she's near the bars. Lily looks a little insane.
Elena puts makeup on Bonnie's throat. Sounds like Lily is at the crazy stage of drying out. Jo comes in. Wants to put her dress on. Matt arrives with a truck. Bonnie goes with him to pick up the centerpieces.
Caroline has Tyler helping her. She apologizes for trying to kill him. He says we're good. If you want to make amends, let me get out of here. Ha ha. Next row. Liv arrives. Shorter hair. They trade words. She says she's going to wait outside.
Matt and Bonnie. Bonnie says she's having nightmares about Lily and Kai. Matt says when Bonnie Bennett has a hunch, you don't ignore it.
Damon says the house is nice. Stefan heated a microwave dinner. You'll need energy for these. Paperwork. Taxes, health insurance, driver's license. And you need a job. You can't borrow money from me. I won't know where you live. Someone could use me. You and Elena will have to move away to protect yourselves. This will be your life, Damon. This will be your hell. Damon says no, this will be! Elena's dream life.
Stefan calls Elena. Damon thought this through. He's ready to do this. She says push him. Make him see life isn't perfect.
Elena's drinking too much champagne. jo says pace yourself. Jo takes the glass away. I'll make coffee. Jo passes out, hitting her head on a piano on the way!
Jo in the hospital. Doc says you're fine. Babies are fine. It was just a panic attack. She asks Elena to keep it to herself.
Elena says you can't tell Jo I told you. The doctors says she had a panic attack and she can't self-medicate like you, Bourbon Breath. Why didn't you tell me how amazing it feels to be human again? I feel connected to the world again. I feel....alive? Yeah. He says it's because your life has purpose again.
Caroline with Tyler. He says nothing has changed with Liv. Caroline says talk to her and work out your problems like an adult. When you had her, you were trying, Tyler. He tells her to butt out. Ouch.
Damon applauds Stefan for the efforts, but we need to get to the wedding. Stefan says one more thing. What if you and Elena aren't soulmates? We were soulmates, too. What if something goes wrong? You're alone. Because couples never have problems. Let me show ya.
Damon waiting up for Elena coming home from the hospital. A couple more years of residency. She's tired, going to bed. Stefan shows him 7 years in. Damon comes home drunk. Elena's busy on the laptop. He says the bar is a lot more affectionate than you. She says I'm working my butt off to build my career. He says I can't do what I want to do! No more vampire things. I can't because of you! this was a damn mistake. She agrees. He tells Stefan to get out of his head.
This about you being alone. Awfully selfish of you, Brother. Stefan says you still can't control life! What will your life look like without her? He shows Damon.
Damon comes home to a dark house. Puts a frozen dinner in the microwave. Drinks out of a bottle. Watches TV in the dark with the bottle. He turns the TV off.
Stefan lets go. Damon says that's harsh, Brother. Stefan says she wanted me to be harsh. Damon says funny, the two people closest to me are the most sadistic. Stefan says once you're human, there's no going back. Can't make the choice for me or here. You have to want to be human for yourself.
guests gathering at the wedding. Caroline coordinating. Elena says Jo is fine. Stefan arrives. Caroline bolts. Elena asks about Damon. Stefan says he's taking time to think. She asks how you feel? He says the thought of losing him.... She asks what do you think he'll do? Stefan says Damon as a human was aimless. Never strong. Didn't know who he was. He truly became Damon as a vampire. He loves it and I don't think he'll give it up.
Matt and Bonnie get downstairs. Matt can't breathe. Then Bonnie can't breathe. And Lily is gone. They pass out.
Lily finds Enzo and orders Earl Grey tea. She says I heard you tried to bring me an MP 3 player and I wanted to thank you. He asks if he should expect a Ripper moment. She says no. Today, I'm getting my family back.
Jo getting ready. She takes a call from Ric. He says who knew there were so many of you Geminis? She asks if he's seen her dad. He says not yet. See you soon. Her dad comes in. He asks to walk her down the aisle.
Caroline runs into Stefan again. You're avoiding me. She says no, I'm organizing. He asks to talk. Okay. He tells her about Damon. She says it's okay to worry about your brother. He takes her hand. She asks if he hates her. Of course not. She says I made a list of all the things I've done since I fell for you. It started when you moved away. When my mom died, all I needed was you to tell me you felt something for me. And then I turned off my humanity and got you to turn off yours. The old Caroline would've smacked me. I hate how this has made me feel. He says losing control is how I feel around you. It's being vulnerable. Giving up control. She knows, but....where I'm at right now, control is all I have and I don't think I can give that up. She walks away.
Elena in the barn. Damon walks in. She says I talked to Stefan. Damon says he did not go easy on me. Your fault. His argument was pretty convincing. I'd made up my mind. And then....
He sees an old couple come home. They bicker. And then smile at each other and hug and kiss. And walk into their house with arms around each other. Still clearly in love.
Damon says I'm taking the Cure. Being a vampire has been a blast, but I'd give it up in a second to be your husband, your partner, the father of your kids. I can take it for us, okay? The smallest chance at a perfect life with you is infinitely better than immortality without you. I will love you until I take my last breath on this earth. They kiss in the aisle under all the wedding decorations. It's a beautiful set.
Caroline's freaking out. Elena and Damon and Bonnie and Matt are missing. Caroline tells Stefan we're not waiting anymore.
Damon and Elena having sex in a barn. The wedding is starting. She says oh my God, we're SO late. They rush into their clothes.
Caroline says I hope it was worth it. Go! They walk up to the altar.
Matt wakes up. Bonnie comes to. She says it was....
Damon tells Ric I'm joining the human club. Ric says I'm proud of you. Jo and her father comes down the aisle. She and Ric smile at each other. She looks beautiful. The minister starts. Jo and Ric prepare to say their vows.
Enzo and Lily go to an address. A shipping yard.
Ric says his vows first. We beat the odds and I got to meet you. You inspire me. You've shown me that happiness is something I can have. And so, I promise to be with you and love you and dodge fate with you for the rest of our lives. Jo cries. She says Alaric Saltzman, you are.... She's bleeding! She collapses. Kai killing her Is she dead? He gives everyone a headache. Miss me? No? Oh well. All the glass explodes. Elena is knocked out.
Next week - finale. Elena's life. Say goodbye. Before it's too late. Damon cradles Elena's body. Stefan and Caroline rush up with worried faces.
