“The Man Who Saved Central City”
BARRY DECIDES HE NEEDS TO PROTECT THE CITY ON HIS OWN — Picking up months after the Singularity attacked Central City, Barry (Grant Gustin) is still struggling to forgive himself for Eddie’s death. Concerned about putting his friends in danger, Barry has pushed everyone away and has chosen to protect the city on his own. When a meta-human named Atom Smasher (guest star Adam Copeland) attacks the city, Iris (Candice Patton) tells Barry that he needs to let his friends help him protect the citizens of Central City. Meanwhile, Cisco (Carlos Valdes) helps Joe (Jesse L. Martin) with his Meta Task Force. Ralph Hemecker directed the episode with story by Greg Berlanti & Andrew Kreisberg and teleplay by Andrew Kreisberg & Gabrielle Stanton (#201). Original airdate 10/6/2015.
Episode 1:
Barry faces off against Heat and Cold. Firestorm lends a hand.
Barry and Ronnie come back to Star Labs. Ronnie and Caitlyn kiss. Joe and Barry hug. Eddie? Wells? Wells stands from his chair.
Barry in the lab alone. An alert goes off. Flash goes out into the city. It's been 6 months since the singularity. He's on his own now. Keeps the people he loves safe.
Joe and Barry at a crime scene. Barry says he'll let him know when he knows more. Joe asks if he'll show up to the Flash Day thing. The Mayor wants the give him the key to the city. A man photographs them.
Precinct. Cisco works there now? Captain says you're not getting a badge, Mr. Ramon. LOL. Joe hopes Cisco will get that machine together. Caitlyn works at Mercury Labs now. Iris shows up. Joe tells her to talk to Barry if she wants him to go to the Flash Day rally.
Renovation scene. Barry putting Jitters back together. Iris comes in. She says it seems like a lot of local businesses are being rebuilt at night in secret. She wants to write an article on it. He says don't. He says he didn't save the city, so he doesn't want to be celebrated. She says Central City believes in the Flash. So do I.
The singularity day. Barry races up into it. Cisco tells him to keep doing it. It's stabilizing. Professor and Ronnie will go up to stop it. Ronnie kisses Caitlyn. Firestorm flies up into the wormhole. Barry yells at them to stop. Barry catches the Professor. Ronnie is gone? Caitlyn and Iris run over. Barry hugs Caitlyn. "I'm so sorry."
Flash Day. Crowd cheers. Music. Joe and Cisco there. Cisco spots Caitlyn. Mayor addresses the people. A year ago, our world changed. We got villains, but we also got The Flash. The Flash restores hope where it was lost. He's honored to present the Key to The Flash. Crowd cheers. But no Flash. And then he arrives. Crowd chants for him. His friends are pleased to see him. People scream. Flash gets the Mayor out before he's squished. A masked man comes at Flash and he's really strong. Cops fire at him.
Cisco flashes to an alternate reality. Joe yells at him to get the Boot. Joe fires it at the villain. Barry gets up. Joe tells Cisco to run. Barry throws propane tanks at the guy and tells Joe to shoot them. They see the villain's face. He leaves.
Cisco and Joe researching the perp. Someone who looks like the guy he murdered. Iris comes in. She says the xray machines at the hospital all failed at once. Cisco will check on it. She tells Joe that Barry can't do this alone anymore. joe's trying to not push him away. She says then lets not let him push us away.
Cisco visits Caitlyn. He admires the toys. She says she can't come back. Cisco tells her about the Metahuman. Asks for her help.
Barry reads the paper. "Flash Falters". Barry gets a visit from an attorney. We need to talk about STAR Labs. Wells left it to him as part of the living trust. The facility goes into receivership at the end of the week unless you watch this. A video for you. Barry doesn't want to. The lawyer says that's up to you. He leaves. Barry gets an alert of an unauthorized entry at STAR Labs.
It's the Professor, Iris, and Cisco. We need to find the meta at places without radiation. Joe's there, too. Iris says we all want to help the city. You can't deny us that. Professor names it Atom Smasher. Cisco hugs him. It's a great name. Barry says you can go now. Joe says you need to let Cisco and Stein figure out how to stop the meta. Barry says no I don't and runs out. Cisco finds Barry's comm system. We can't talk to him.
The plant. Meta soaking in radiation. Barry arrives. Atom Smasher says I'm only here to hurt you, buddy.
Cisco taps into the security cameras.
Flash vs. Atom Smasher. Barry's in trouble.
Stein tells Cisco to use the alarm system. It goes off. Professor Stein, you are a genius. He says that's already been well-established. LOL.
Barry staggers back to STAR Labs and passes out. Into a memory. He's a little boy and refusing to eat. Joe says it's okay to be sad. Your parents will understand you're not strong all the time. That's why I'm here. Little Barry hugs Joe.
Joe sits at Barry's bedside. Barry wakes. Where is everyone? Joe figured he wouldn't want an audience. Iris is right. We're not doing this anymore. You'd rather get yourself killed. But you're not the only person that made decisions that day. Eddie and Ronnie chose to help you stop Wells and the singularity. Stop claiming all the guilt and regret. Live with it and move on. Maybe you should start trying to rebuild things that really matter.
Barry visits Caitlyn. She's surprised. It's been a while. Barry says Cisco said he saw you at the Flash Day celebration. You and I both know I wasn't the hero that day. She says he was. You did everything you could. I don't blame you for Ronnie's death. I blame myself. When Ronnie asked me to leave and go have a normal life, I said no. If I'd gone with him, he'd still be alive. Being at STAR Labs reminds me of that every day. Barry offers her a handkerchief. The video thumb drive drops out of his pocket. He tells her about it. She suggests watching it together.
Wells says if you're watching this, I'm dead. All those years helping raise you, we were never truly enemies. I'm going to give you what you want most. Give the following message to the police. A confession of murdering Nora Allen. Barry calls Joe. Meet me at STAR Labs. Thanks. Caitlyn says she'll drive.
Joe on the phone. Barry pacing. Joe says the DA says it looks good. Iris hugs Barry. Barry asks the team how are we going to beat Atom Smasher? Caitlyn has an idea. If he likes radiation so much, give it to him.
The Flash light. Cisco saw it in a comic book somewhere. LOL. Atom Smasher follows Barry. Wow, he's big. Barry lured him into a reactor. Cisco turns it on. Atom Smasher shrinks. Radiation cleared. Safe for Barry to go in. He tells the man I'm sorry. I couldn't let you hurt anyone else. Why did you want to kill me? He says "He promised to take me home if I killed you." Barry asks who? "Zoom."
Iron Heights Prison. Barry's dad walks free. They hug. Smile. Let's get out of here.
Welcome home party at Joe's house. Awwww. Champagne and cake. Cisco gets a badge. Stein gives a toast. He's reminded of a Hebrew word used during times of graduation - forward. Forward. Joe says well said.
Henry and Barry. Barry suggests getting an apartment together. His dad doesn't look well. Barry asks, are you not planning on sticking around? Henry says can you be all you're becoming with me here? Barry says you're the only family I have left. Henry says no, you have a family in this room. When you need me, I'll be here. But Central City needs you to be The Flash. My kid, the superhero. I have to go. I need you to tell me it's okay. Barry nods. They hug. Henry and Joe exchange a look.
STAR Labs. Barry and Joe. Henry is gone. Joe asks Barry if he's good. Barry says it feels like every time I win, I still lose. Team in the room. Cisco upgraded the suit with a new lightning bolt. Stein likes it. Caitlyn says STAR Labs has increased security. A man walks in. I know you, Barry Allen. Joe asks who the hell are you. I'm Joe Garrick and your world is in danger.
