ONE STEP AHEAD – When an impulsive decision by Damon (Ian Somerhalder) threatens to unravel a carefully negotiated deal between Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Lily (guest star Annie Wersching), he has no choice but to make amends with his mother before things spiral further out of control. However, Lily remains one step ahead and carries out a harsh plan that hits Damon where it hurts most. Elsewhere, after returning to Whitmore Collage, Alaric (Matt Davis) turns to Bonnie (Kat Graham) for help with a mysterious and potentially dangerous artifact he has obtained, while Matt (Zach Roerig) is forced into making a risky life or death decision. Ep 2:
Dallas, Texas. 3 years from now. Caroline working as a producer at a news station. Fiance! He's asking about her schedule right before the wedding. To Mystic Falls. She says but he knows we can't go back there. Hmmmmm.
Cameras on. Couple youngsters sneak into the Mystic Falls border. At night. They're ghost hunters. They near an old tomb. Elena's tomb? Heretics take the girl. Then attack the guy. Matt shows up and says let him go. They kill the guy.
Matt wakes up in the daylight.
Alaric's class. Talking about death and Mystic Falls. What's behind the stories from cultures about creatures that cheat death? He tells them all they'll get from Mystic Falls is a trespassing ticket, so stay out. Class dismissed. Bonnie comes in. She asks if he's okay? Damon told him what he was doing in Europe. She says it's okay if you're not over Jo. I'm a bit offended you didn't come to me first. Alaric asks if she's ever heard of the Phoenix Stone.
Stefan leaving a message for Caroline. Heretic stops his car. Stefan asks can I help you? Heretic gives him a headache. Lily arrives. Thought we had a deal. He says yeah, we do. She tells him about Malcolm. You didn't know? No, I didn't. She came to tell him so he understands what we had to do.
Enzo ties up Caroline with vervain ropes. He says I'm the closest thing you have to a friend in here. She pleads with him. He gets close. She attacks him, and runs. Into the Heretics. Enzo says it's alright, I got her. They spell Caroline unconscious.
Lockwood mansion. Damon's taking over. Need to open some windows. It smells like dog in here, which is funny considering Tyler's been with Jeremy. Stefan says you killed him, didn't you? The Heretic, Malcolm. Lily and I had a deal. She took Caroline to retaliate. So you're going to go over and fix it.
He knows at the mansion. Lily has a maid. Damon admits he killed Malcolm. Offers himself for Caroline. And he can't walk in. Why can't I walk into my house? Because this is no longer your house. Lily has the deed to prove it. She says if you don't mind, I have to get ready to go bury my son. Oooooo, zing.
Alaric heard about the Stone from a friend at Duke. It's supposed to have resuscitative powers. He snuck into the Maritime Museum and stole the Stone. Bonnie says she doesn't feel any magic from it. Bonnie goes deeper, and saw something. People dying. There's something wrong with that stone, Ric. Something evil. And your friend told you that. Which is why you waited to talk to me last. We have to destroy it.
Damon tells Stefan that we no longer own the house. He has a call into the Registrar's office to find out who does. Stefan says it's funny you think she's the villain when you're the one that killed one of her loved ones. Are you taking her side? No, but I'm definitely not taking yours.
Caroline hanging from chains. The lesbians ask for fashion advice. Caroline snickers at the Victorian dress. Caroline says my best friend used to live here and I'm sure some of our dresses are still here. Heretic threatens Caroline with an eyeliner pencil.
Lily and Enzo. We're leaving for the cemetery in a few hours. I'm sure Caroline can survive until then. I'd invite you, but someone has to stay with the house. One of the Heretic girls tells Enzo to stop caring about Caroline. Lily lets the other girls get away with murder.
Damon calls Bonnie. She thinks she convinced Ric to destroy the Stone. He tells Bonnie that Lily has Caroline. She says this is my fault. Damon says I have a mission for you.
Matt does target practice. Bonnie surprises him. You own the Salvatore house. They compelled you. So, the only way to break the seal is for me to die. Bon, tell me that's not the plan. She says what do you think about me using magic to stop your heart?
**Poor Matt......hasn't he died enough times already? Shame the Salvatore rings wouldn't work anymore since Purgatory/The Other Side is gone.
Matt says doesn't it ever feel like we're fighting the wrong enemy? Bonnie says we don't have time for a debate.
Caroline has several eyeliners in her. The witch chanted on her. Mary Louise can't touch Caroline anymore. Caroline tells Nora her new dress is cute. Thank you.
Bonnie and Matt. He says let's just do it. Bonnie chants.
Stefan and Damon. Stefan doesn't think Matt will agree. Bonnie texts Damon. Seal's down.
Alaric in the classroom. Will he put the stone in acid? He dissolves a rock. Looks at a photo of him and Jo.
Bonnie sees horrible images when she's about to bring Matt back. She passes out. Oh no!
Damon says hell old friend. Enzo asks can I help you? Damon says yes. Help me get Caroline back? Enzo says that's be foolish since I kidnapped her in the first place. Damon walks in. Enzo says Lily is burying Malcolm in the family crypt next to Elena.
Heretics walk to the crypt with the urn. Pull out Elena's coffin and dump the body under the falls. She can spend the next 60 years under water.
Bonnie wakes. Almost 6 minutes for Matt. She chants. He gasps awake. 6:01. Awfully long ten seconds, Bon.
Caroline asks Stefan if that's you or am I hallucinating? He frees her. And can't touch her. Your skin is vervain.
Damon in the cemetery. The crypt is open. No, no, no, no! Lily says you always threw the worst tantrums. Where is she? Lily says that's the fun of cloaking spells. I'm the only one that knows where she is. Damon says torture me all you want, but leave Elena out of this! Lily recalls that Damon broke a vase and stuck to a lie no matter now much he was punished. So she tool away all his toys. He cried and cried and admitted everything. Damon says she's not a toy soldier. Lily says Malcolm was not a vase. He was a vital part of this family. He meant something to all of us. They tell him how Malcolm saved them all. Lily says he was her eldest son, her rock, her sounding board. Ironic that you took him from me. Damon says alright, tell me what you want.
**Damon looks a bit too tan in the light. Heh.
Stefan gets a jacket on Caroline. He'll call Damon. The house shakes! Stefan's thrown out the window. Caroline pulled downstairs. The maid invites her in. Enzo says sorry love.
Bonnie wants to take Matt to the hospital. She admits this is my fault. I helped Damon kill Malcolm and it was my idea to stop your heart. Matt says I drive up and down these streets every day, and now I pray I don't see a soul and I hate that. I hate them. Bonnie says then let's do something about it.
Stefan returns to the house. You left. I could've gotten her back, but you left. No comeback? No funny reason? Answer me! Damon says I won't be here much longer. Lily's exact words were as far from Mystic Falls as humanly possible. She has Elena. She's making me leave town for good.
Damon asks what would you have done? Damon says she has all our toys. She took mine and took yours, and you'd do anything she wanted. this is her plan. She wants us at each other's throats. Damon says we do. You go grovel and I'll do some fracturing of my own. I'm going to find the 6th Heretic and negotiate a trade.
bonnie calls Ric. He says it worked. But he didn't dissolve the stone. He's in the morgue again. Jo's in #3. Alaric puts the stone on the dead young guy from the beginning of the episode. He comes back to life! But only while the stone is on him.
Enzo playing guitar. Nice. Lily listens. Smiles a little. He asks how was the burial? She says as lovely as it could be, I suppose. She asks if Caroline should be moved to your room. Have you decided which room you'll take? He asks if she considers him family like the others? She says of course. He says I'm not here to be a child, Lily. I chose you. No "us". I'm here because of you. He takes the guest room in the East Wing. Goodnight.
Caroline pacing. Nora says don't get cocky. Gives her a book. Valerie is the worst of all of us. It's Stefan's journal. The first thing she looked for in 1903. Caroline reads an entry. Valerie and Stefan met in the 1800s.
3 years from now. Caroline got another call, from Stefan Salvatore. She says she never wants to hear the name Stefan Salvatore ever again. The man takes an arrow to the neck, then Caroline is staked!!
