JIM BEAVER RETURNS – A dangerous creature is accidentally released into an old house, attacking a mother and her child, leaving them both in a coma. Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) learn that Bobby (guest star Jim Beaver) and Rufus (guest star Steven Williams) once tracked the same entity so the Winchesters look to the past to come up with a plan to catch the monster before any one dies. Rufus and Bobby recap. Awwww. Memories.
House in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Woman on the phone. The house is more of a fixer upper than we thought. She's peeling wallpaper. Hears a scream. Cat? Runs upstairs. Little girl on her bed. Something bad is in the house. Why did we have to move here? Why is it so cold in my room? Mom says the furnace will be fixed tomorrow. She'll bring a glass of water, then back to sleep. Mom leaves the room. Lights turn off and the door closes. Girl hiding under the bed. Footsteps in the hall. Door opens. Something grabs and pulls her out.
Sam and Dean in a diner. Sam shows him an article. The girl was attacked by "an entity". She's in a coma. Sam says the case seems like a layup.
They visit the hospital. Mother asks why the FBI has any interest in this? She says even the internet thinks I'm crazy. We don't. She says Cat woke up screaming. She heard footsteps and felt something bad. Lights were out in her room and it was cold in there. Dean asks to look at the house. She tells them where a key is. They leave. Girl has a mark on her ankle from the hand that grabbed her.
Boys get to the house. Woman asks if she can help. FBI came to that house a handful of years ago, too. They were two of the rudest people I ever met. Sam asks if they were elder statesmen? Yeah....
Bobbi asleep in the car. Rufus wakes him. You're helping me with a case, like I told you on the phone. Rufus thought a win would be nice. It's Shabbat. Bobby says you drove here! Ain't that against the rules? Woman asks why they're here? Bobby says they're Riggs and Murtaugh and it's nothing to worry about. Rufus says he was nice in 1985, the worst year of my life. LOLOLOL.
Boys in the house. EMF meters. Dean goes upstairs. Meters going nuts. All over the house. Sam says the world is small, but not that small. Dean will dig into Bobby's journals.
Bobby and Rufus talk to a woman. Her child was attacked. She says the room was cold and the lights went out. There's a handprint on his ankle. Bobby thanks her. Rufus asks about an affordable motel.
Sam got the same room for luck.
Bobby and Rufus in the motel. Rufus asks why were you sleeping in your car?
Two deaths in the house. One accidental. One murder. Dean says they were on a ghost hunt. Bobby didn't write down what happened. Dean says we might have to dig up two graves. Sam says that sounds too easy. Dean likes easy.
Bobby and Rufus arguing. Rufus says it's a Baku. Bobby says we hunted one in Alaska. It's a ghost, plain and simple. We got diggin' to do. Rufus says the car sounds like road kill casserole in here. Shut up, idjit.
Dean and Sam dig up a grave. Ashes.
Bobby uses a digger to open the grave. Tells Rufus it's after sundown, so get to diggin'. Rufus wants to ask something. About sleeping in your car. Bobby's been up for days trying to find a way to stop the apocalypse. Sam and Dean are right in the middle of this thing. I'm worried about my boys, Rufus. Rufus says even if we keep the world spinning, not everyone will be on that bus ride home. Sacrifice, greater good, all that jazz. Bobby knows. Rufus says old est rule of hunting. You can't save everyone.
Sam and Dean find ashes in the second grave, too. Sam wonders what are we hunting?
The mom in the house. She's pulled on the floor by her feet.
Mother in a coma. Dean and Sam at the hospital. Dr. Richards came in to help. She was here when it happened before.
Mary Henderson in a coma. Weird mark on the ankle. Vitals are fading rapidly.
Sam asks what happened? Doc says they woke up the next day, perfectly happened. I hope the same thing happens here.
Dean will talk to the local PD. Sam and Dean visit Mary Henderson. An FBI agent told her to never touch the wallpaper in the sitting room. In the coma, she had a nightmare. Dark, faded, alone, and then I saw things. My husband dead. Then he was gone. I couldn't leave the house. Then I saw spirits or something. I don't know. A bad dream. We tried to move on. Put the house up for sale. Walked on the mortgage. Destroying our credit was worth it, though. Anything to get away from that damn house.
Sam looks at the wallpaper. He and Dean peel it off to see a symbol. It's broken from the scraping. What are we hunting? They go to the books and stuff.
Bobby and Rufus researching, too. Bobby's got it. A soul eater. It's undead. Exists between our world and another. Makes a nest in a house.
Looks and feels like the house the nest is in. They can yank their vic's souls to their nests. The nest shows them stress to keep them vulnerable.
What happens to remains of the souls in the nest? They keep the soul eater fed in lean times. Bobby says they can be trapped.
Dean reads Bobby's journal.
Rufus asks how it really happened. Bobby says you could FEEL the badness. I heard footsteps. I was trapped. But I had this old Celtic sidgil. Supposed to trap monsters. It was all I had. The bad juju got a hell of a lot worse, but when I finished, the house went back to normal. The other hunter never did wake up.
If the sidgil only trapped it, how did Mary and her son get out of the nest? Sam says too bad Rufus and Bobby aren't around. Sam says MoL found a way to kill soul eaters with another sidgil. One person has to go in the nest. Dean says not it. Sam suggests rock paper scissors.
Dean says we're never settling with that stupid game again. LOL.
Rufus painting. Bobby's nervous. Noises upstairs. Keep painting. Bobby heads toward the stairs and up.
Dean enters a room. Lights go out.
Bobby in the dark upstairs.
Dean hearing the noises. Looking around. Come and get me, you SOB.
Bobby says stay away from me, you son of a bitch.
They're grabbed by the soul eater.
Dean wakes. Stands up. Sam? Sam? Sees Sam on the ground. Then he's gone.
Bobby wakes. Stands. Rufus? Sees Dean and Sam dead. Then gone. Boy asks are you real? Will Henderson? Yes sir. Am I in trouble? No, not at all. Bobby says I'm stuck here, too, but I'll take care of you. Have you seen your mother? Nope. The sad people are right behind you. They look sick. You don't see them? Bobby doesn't.
Rufus comes looking for Bobby and finds his body. He runs off. Back to painting the sidgil.
Sam drags Dean's body into the kitchen. Sam paints.
Dean paints the sidgil. Girl asks him what he's doing? He says it's nice to meet you, Cat. She says she's not supposed to talk to strangers. He gives his name. I'm here to get you out of this place. Have you seen your mom? She says no, it's too crowded here. Dean says how about we get you out of here?
Bobby sees the souls. Soul eater touches him.
Rufus sees Bobby. Shoot me, you kill your friend. Rufus says rock salt, Bobby can handle it. Soul eater says come to the nest.
Cat calls the sidgil pretty. She doesn't like it here. Dean doesn't, either. Says my brother is doing a painting just like this. As soon as he's done, we're out of here. Dean sees the souls. Soul eater touches him.
Dean's body is up. Can't let you finish that fingerpaintin', boy. Punches Sam.
Come with me into the nest. Sam says fight this!
Rufus shoots. They fight.
Sam and Dean/Soul Eater fight.
Rufus paints the wall.
Soul Eater says I can keep you safe. Both of you, forever.
Bobby sits up. World shakes. That can't be good.
Sam still fighting. Breaks a chair over Dean's body. Paints the wall. It's back. He finishes the sidgil. It's glows.
Dean's awake. Souls leave. He's with Cat and her mom. Dean sees all the old souls going. Bobby! His remnant leaves.
Rufus asks Bobby if he's okay? What the hell just happened?
Sam holds Dean. I got ya.
Bobby hanging wallpaper. Phone rings. Well? Rufus says everybody's awake and happy. Rufus says it was a baku. Case closed. Bobby says he doesn't like it. Rufus says take the win. What's you see in the nest? My boys, both of 'em, both of 'em dead. I don't know what the hell I saw. Rufus says forget the oldest rule, Bobby.
Sam tells the family that the house is safe now. Kitchen might need a remodel. Boys leave the house.
Bobby leaves the house. Waves to the neighborhood watch lady. Rufus left him a bottle of booze. Phone rings. Dean calling. Where the hell have you been? He's got a lead on Lilith. If you're done sittin' on your ass... Bobby calls them idjits and drives away.
Boys walk to the Impala. Sam says the journal didn't say Bobby went in the nest. Dean doesn't know. Maybe it made me see things. However..... Couldn't Bobby and I have been there the same time? Sam says my head hurts. First we need to stop in Tennessee. Bobby wouldn't want a case unfinished. What else did you see? Dean says I saw you dead on the floor. Sam says that's kind of comforting. Heh, yeah. They leave. Allman Brothers on the radio.
Next ep - Fear the reaper. Reaper comes for Sam.
