KEEPING SECRETS - As punishment for breaking the rules, Hope (Danielle Rose Russell), Lizzie (Jenny Boyd), Josie (Kaylee Bryant), and MG (Quincy Fouse) are forced to participate in a community service project in the Mystic Falls town square. Meanwhile, Landon (Aria Shahghasemi) and Rafael's (Peyton Alex Smith) attempt at a carefree life on the road takes a dangerous turn when they become unsuspecting targets. Finally, Alaric (Matthew Davis) realizes that keeping secrets from his students may be causing more harm than good. Carol Banker directed the episode written by Julie Plec & Sherman Payne (#103). 9PM and KTLA is still showing local news, not CW programming. So no Legacies, either.
14th century France. Torches in the woods. Two men find an altar. And you wanted to turn back. The Guardian. They want to take the knife. But the gargoyle awoke. It kills one man. The other is a witch and uses fire. Doesn't work. He begs for mercy. Gargoyle kills him.
Ric reading with the knife on his desk. Outside the window.
Daytime at the school. Chain spell class. Where's Penelope Park? Cramps. A note floats in. Twins and Hope.
Lizzie tells Ric she was provoked. And secondly, if anyone should take the blame, it's Josie. Ric says bus leaves in 3 minutes and you'll be on it. Go, all of you. Hope wants to help with research. Ric says I can't drag you or anyone else into this until I figure out what's going on. Understood?
Mystic Falls. They ask what Hope did. She tells Lizzie no time for girl talk. They've been brought to do community service. Hope takes trash duty. Lizzie wants to remove paint. Bickers with Josie. Josie goes to Hope's side. Kids split up. Lizzie takes MG with her.
Rafael and Landon roasting a rabbit over the campfire. Landon thanks him for sticking with him. Raf says you run, I run, period. They try the meat. Landon thinks Hope hates him. Probably. Raf asks why did you lie? Landon can't put it into words. It's like the knife wanted me to steal it and wanted me to lie. Raf says you'll never see her again, anyway. Just the two of us living off the land. They agree burgers would be better. heh. Landon has an idea to make money. Put the werewolf skills to work.
Lizzie tells MG to work faster. They other kid says we're faster, we're stronger, we're better. And we have nothing to apologize for. Town kids come to pester them. Dana says hi to MG. Kid pours a milkshake on Lizzie.
She goes back to the school. Passes the gargoyle.
Ric has the knife in a jar. Counselor comes into the office. Rain check on therapy. She says Dorian never misses appointments. Ric says whoever wields it has the power to save the world, or end it. The knife is in HCL. Ric's tried to destroy it. And nothing works. Tells Emma he's fine. Lizzie comes in and calls him a jerk and rants about the incident. As I was walking home, I did the work, dug deep, and this is all his fault. If you'd been at that game, everything would've gone differently. And it's not fair Hope gets to know secrets you won't share with your own daughters. At least you know now why I'm so screwed up.
Pedro says that statue just moved. Lizzie doesn't believe. Pedro says it did it again! She says we're being punked, Pedro. Then it's...... Right behind Pedro. Lizzie? She tells him to run. Get inside. She takes his hands. Now find my dad. She tries a spell on the gargoyle and it doesn't seem to work.
Lizzie wakes. She's locked in her body. Her belly struck with claws. She's paralyzed. Ric calls the researcher to check French lore for gray scale.
Hope and Josie. Josie asks why you pick fights? You poke. What happened when you went to find Landon? Hope says there was nothing to tell! She stabbed her own foot with the trash stick. They pull it out. Then laugh about it.
Raf and Landon make a bet on Raf getting to the roof and back in 20 seconds. He does it with his wolf powers. They take money from all the betters. Man says triple or nothing. How about a 100? But I want him to do it in 10 seconds. He texts that they're here.
Ric locks down the school. Gives orders. Ric will draw it from the school. I have what it wants. He takes the knife out of the desk drawer.
Alone in the hall. Behind him. It stands still. Ric gets closer. Raises the knife and it grabs his arm and growls at him.
Josie feeling pain from Lizzie. MG kissing Dana. Josie says he always goes for the wrong kind of girls. Josie says her last crush was evil incarnate. The next, Lizzie has dibs. Hope says that's not right. Hope says your dad knows I used dark magic, that's why I'm in trouble. And Landon and Rafael ran off together. I don't know what to believe. Then he wrote me this letter that was.....sweet. Lizzie is sensitive. Caroline is on long recruitment missions. Lizzie misses her. Josie says your mom was beautiful. Ric sent flowers when Hayley died. Josie wonders where the boys are now. Hope says there's a spell my aunt taught me. Kind of like magical video chat. Don't tell your dad. Josie says this is a secret she can keep.
Landon and Raf eating burgers in the woods. Money has run, wolf, or die marked on it. Landon gets nervous. Sees Hope. Then not. Puts the money in his pocket. We should get out of here.
Josie feels twin pain. Lizzie's in trouble.
Gargoyle at the gates. He can't leave the property. It makes him mad.
Josie wants to go home. Researcher says I'm under strict orders to keep you here. Why?
MG calls Dana mad hot. Hotter than Lizzie? He compels her to tell the truth. She says she's secretly in love with Connor to make him jealous. And thinks he's doing it to make Lizzie jealous. He won't take advantage of her now. Forget we made out but remember I'm a super cool dude who crushes it all day every day.
Landon wants to keep moving. Raf says stop and tell me what's up? They get darted.
Gargoyle scoring the paneling in the school. Emma hears it. Gargoyle has the knife and keeps scraping. Emma says a quiet spell. Stands at the windowed door. Gargoyle appears! And can't see anyone in the room. Full cloaking. He moves on.
Boys wake chained to trees. You okay? I don't think either of us are. There's a dead guy. Jeremy! Relax. I'm not here to hurt you. I'm your new best friend.
Bus. Caleb fed on Dana. She's catatonic. MG says he's good. Caleb compels her to go home, find a scarf, and forget about today. Caleb wants it to be secret. MG reluctantly agrees. Caleb says vamps before tramps.
Josie and Hope get home. Look for everyone. Ric finds Hope. She gives him a book from Dorian. Did the Gauls provide clear instructions? Hit it hard, repeat as needed. She's shocked it took the knife and left Ric alive. They took the containment spell down. Josie did. And I have questions.
Jeremy killed a wolf hunter. Tells them this world is dangerous for you newbies. Alaric told him to track them and make sure they're safe. Landon shows Raf the note. Jeremy will grab shovels. They'll bury the body and go back to school. Landon apologizes to Raf for hiding the note. You just were having fun today like you hadn't since the girlfriend died. You should go back to the school. Raf says I never thanked you for that. After Cassie, you were all there. I appreciated it. Let's do what we have to here. Back to school. I'm not going without you. All in. All in! Landon concedes. They hug.
Hope, Josie, and Ric hunting the Gargoyle. Find Emma and the kids. Gargoyle at the top of the stairs behind them. It swoops down. Ric intercedes for Hope. The gargoyle won't stab him. Josie hits it. Hope and Josie throw chants at it to bust it into bits. Nice job. Josie yells at her dad. Ric knew it wouldn't kill him because his research said so.
**Gargoyles protect places, people, or things. By lore. It wouldn't want to kill someone being valiant and protecting another. Probably. It was a guardian of that powerful knife for a reason.
Ric and Hope. Gargoyles are protectors. The villagers revered a relic, the knife. He vowed never to harm humanity and to battle evil on their behalf. It thinks Ric needed protection. Hope says one more thing. You always tell us to work together. I haven't always listened, but I'm starting to think it's pretty good advice. If you want me and the twins to get along, for them to be happy, these secrets are going to tear us apart.
Ric giving a speech to the students about fairytales and myths. A dragon. A gargoyle. Some of us were forced to fight. We won, this time. They were drawn here by a knife. In their minds, we're the villains because we have what they want. We don't know why, but we'll find out.
Dorian wants a raise with dental to go into the field for deeper research.
Ric tells them about this to warn them, to look out fo each other. To do the best for each other. We're more than a school. We're a family. We'll stand together. We'll fight together. And we'll win or lose together through whatever comes next.
Hope see Landon and Raf arrive. She walks away from him.
In the woods. Two girls in a car. They want to graffiti the Salvatore School. Call Connor out here! No service. Girl gets out of the car with her phone. The other hears a scream. Sasha? If you and Connor are boning in the woods, I'm going to kill you. She rolls the window back up. The something lands on the roof of the car. She screams at something in front of her.
Next ep - vampire bite. Missing girls. Dana dead. Lizzie says it's hero time.
