HISTORY COMES BACK TO HAUNT THE TEAM WHEN AN ALL-NEW EPISODE OF ABC'S 'MARVEL'S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.' GOES NOIR, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 17
"Out of the Past" - It was just another average morning on July 22, 1955, when Agent Phil Coulson realized the importance of that day in the S.H.I.E.L.D. history books. With a chip on his shoulder and a genre-bending glitch in his system, he'd set into motion a chain of events that would hopefully preserve the timeline as we know it and ensure those pesky chronicoms get the ending they deserve. Episode 4:
Hotel Roosevelt. Coulson voice over. Fate, I don't believe in it. But I know history. I know how it goes.
Man with a gun is following Sousa. I thought I shook you. And then Sousa is face down dead in a pool.
Coulson's circuits crossed up. Color had bled from the world. He's cuffed. But doesn't break out. Sousa talking to someone....or something. 1955. The day that made Daniel Sousa a legend. He delivered a groundbreaking device to Howard Stark, then he was killed. Sousa hangs up the phone and notices Coulson is awake. Coulson says I'm your contact. Sousa doesn't believe him. Coulson gives an excuse for the melted guy. Want to play 20 questions or get this package to Howard Stark? Sousa asks where is it? He has to get it on a train to LA. Coulson wants to go with him. Sousa gives him the cuffs key to dial the phone.
A bar. Tiki bar. These recruits today, they don't know what it's like to be stuck with a bad SO. Enoch is the bartender! Phone rings. The Crazy Canoe. It's been 2 decades for Enoch. He'd love to rejoin them. Coulson hopes he can get a message to the Zephyr. Enoch can transfer him. Put me through. Stand by. Enoch transfers the call and goes back to the guy spilling his guts.
Coulson filled in the team. Dr. Linmore was working on tech vital to SHIELD. Tonight Sousa delivers the device and dies. Mack will send a team to find the device. Coulson tells them what train he'll be on.
Deke driving YoYo to get the machine. He has questions about the 50s. YoYo says it always gets better, just never fast enough. He says some things never change. She says you still have to try. He doesn't know what to think about the mission now. She says They're agents of status quo. Heh.
Stop the car at a house. Spanish style. The door is ajar. YoYo pulls a gun. They quietly start searching. She goes upstairs. Beautiful house that still has its original details. YoYo looks in a bedroom. And a bathroom. There's a body with no face. Chronicoms have already been here.
Deke finds a Chronicom. And gets knocked out from behind.
YoYo gets a briefcase. Device doesn't look so special. Hears a noise. Goes downstairs and discovers Deke has been kidnapped. The car speeds away down the street.
**Like the noir aesthetic?
The train to Los Angeles. Coulson and Sousa board. Sousa's jumpy. Coulson hopes his contact is here. Tells Daniel to have a seat. Or get a drink in the bar car. Calm your nerves. Sousa says he doesn't need a drink.
Coulson worried. YoYo's looking for Deke. She wasn't going to find him and Coulson wasn't getting the package any time soon.
Enoch gets another phone call. YoYo at a payphone. She needs a connection to the Zephyr. He goes back to listening to the complaining man.
Mack tells YoYo he'll send the Quinjet for her.
Train on the move. Coulson lies that he sees his guy. He was waiting for the signal. He steals the man's briefcase. Sousa follows. And two men spy at them.
The gadge is on the Zephyr. It's the Rosetta Stone of SHIELD tech. May calls it incredible. Mack says it's time we find that train.
Coulson making small talk. Sousa says a lot of threats out there. Notices that Coulson doesn't wear a wedding ring. Coulson says I couldn't stick around long enough to make it last. Daniel has a similar story. Sousa says Stark won't be at the meeting. Coulson asks what's he like? Pompous ass. LOL. Sousa wants a drink. Coulson never touches the stuff. Sousa leaves. Chronicom sits down. I come alone with a proposition.
**Dun dun DUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
**May smiled. Over an old nondescript gadget in a briefcase. And called it incredible. Still........not right. But at least she's not robotic and hyper ninja right now. Improving?
Night on the train. Coulson doesn't think a deal is Chronicom style. It came to him because he's not a man. You're lucky you're not human. They're absurd. How will you feel in a thousand years? Give us Earth and your humans will have our charity.
Woman asks Sousa to buy her a drink. Traveling alone is so tedious. It's nice to talk to someone. He says leave the bottle. Guesses she's heading to LA for show business.
Coulson says no deal. You're only making this offer because we're on your heels. Chronicom knows that's not the item. And we know this is the day he dies. We make one call and he dies right now.
Two men enter the bar car. Sousa tells the woman to work on her acting. He noticed the car being cleared out. She says come along quiet. He attacks instead. Daisy rescues Sousa. Coulson knocks out the last. Sousa asks who are they? Mack, that's Coulson, and this is Johnson. We have the package.
Sousa says let's have it. Mack says first we need to take a walk outside.
Deke is awakened. Rise and shine, big brain.
Sousa brought on the Zephyr. Meets Gemma. He wants to know what outfit they're with. May does the flying. She's panicky all of a sudden. Then gets her breathing under control and says she's fine. Simmons asks her to come with her. You're not yourself.
They show the package to Sousa. Mack needs info on their missing team member. Sousa doesn't think the Russians are after this. It's someone else. Sousa doesn't trust them but also admits SHIELD is infiltrated by HYDRA. Yep. Coulson realizes HYDRA took Sousa out. Brings up Malick.
He's grown up, bearded, and asks who Deke is. You damn sure don't look like a scientist. Malick's voice is way deeper than the young man we met before, too.
Deke says he's a salesman. I went into that house and woke up with a screamin' headache. Says he sells toasters. No hard feelings. Wish I could help. Your man here screwed up. Malick kills the henchmen. No one's going to miss a third rate hoodlum. Just like no one's going to miss a toaster salesman.
Coulson tells Mack that Sousa's sacrifice was an inspiration for SHIELD. If he lives, we don't know what impact that is on history.
Sousa and Daisy. He's frustrated he can't act on HYDRA. They took a lot of good people from me. I'll wage that fight alone if I have to. It's a cause I'll die for.
Deke tells Freddy that I was there in 1931. I didn't shoot you. I shot someone that was coming after you. Malick says I owe you a debt of gratitude, Deke. You get to walk out of here instead of being carried out. But if I see you again, you won't be so lucky. Oh, what were you doing in that house, anyway? Deke says just looking out for my future.
May's vitals aren't strange. YoYo brings up the base. May had a panic attack. Simmons says that's severely abnormal. May feeling nothing. Blank. Then my emotions wash over me out of control.
The man is still talking to Enoch. Phone rings. It's Deke this time. I'll connect you. LOL. The drunk calls Enoch the best friend I have. Enoch says it's the 9 drinks in your system. I am alone in this world as I have always been.
Deke tells Mack and Coulson he's in LA. Mack tells him to sit put.
Mack is changing the mission. They've landed. Calls Daisy aside. Sousa says the drop is at 9.
May hasn't felt since the Temple. I went to a world where they don't feel, don't have emotions. Now I can't control mine. Simmons asks if there was panic attached to the latest moment. May says no. The confusion came on after shaking Sousa's hand. She feels worried and concerned. YoYo backs them up. Now? Less. May is feeling everyone else's. Simmons calls it extraordinary. May telling them what she felt from Sousa.
Mack says they're saving Sousa. Let's make some waves.
May felt an overwhelming urge to run. Sousa on a motorcycle out of the Zephyr. Never let a top SHIELD agent out of your sight, guys. You know better by now. He has no reason to stay put.
Rain. Hotel Roosevelt. Sometimes the hero has to die and there's nothing you can do about it. Sousa walking in with the briefcase and his cane.
**I really don't want to see him die. Agent Carter canceled prematurely was bad enough. At least Peggy passed after a full life as an old lady. Daniel's story doesn't have to be one tragedy after the next!
Flying to get to Sousa. Could we get to him before his killer did?
Sousa waiting. The killer is in the lobby, too. Daniel gets a nod from the desk.
The HYDRA man calls Malick. Malick gives the order.
Concierge leaves the desk. Daniel gets up and goes down a hall. HYDRA man follows.
Downstairs. Searching. Which hall. Draws his gun. Sousa behind a pillar. Heads down a different hall. gives the concierge the briefcase. Say hello to Howard. Keeps going. Thought I shook you.
Daniel continues into the pool.
HYDRA man tells Malick the job is done. But no package, though.
But not everything is in the book. Coulson in the pool!
They kidnapped Daniel. Coulson put on his coat and hat and took the cane. The HYDRA man shot him twice in the back. Coulson continued into the pool as a dead man.
Policeman. Get the body out of there before we're all soaked.
Sousa sleeping it off. Coulson drying out. Simmons fixing his glitch. He's got color again as May arrives. Internal monologue is gone. May feels nothing off Coulson. Time to buckle up.
YoYo and Deke. I got a good look at the status quo. Not a fan. Time to jump again. Mack wishes they didn't have to leave Enoch. Daisy says he'll be wherever we head next.
Daniel is awake. Woozy. What did you shoot me with? An icer. It hasn't been invented yet. Coulson gives him real info. And his cane. Sousa asks why didn't you leave me there? Coulson says you're dead. Sousa says I know I'm not dead. Coulson says history says you are. you died a hero. Congrats and condolences. We faked your death. To everyone else, you died at that hotel. Welcome to life after death. I'll tell you all about it.
We're not in 1955 anymore. Nope. Then when are we? We're trying to figure that out. They get a clear radio signal and music plans. No more Mr. Nice Guy. No more Mr. Clean......
**If this is the last season, they're at least putting out some good material! HYDRA is part of the DNA of the show, so it's fitting to deal with its history with SHIELD while fighting the bad guys from the future.
Malick pulls a gun. The Chronicom left behind to help him. You and I share an enemy, Mr. Malick. But mine is from the future. SHIELD will destroy all you have built. It's time to prevent that. How? By doing exactly what I say.
