"This Is What It Takes"
FACING REALITY - After one of their own goes missing, Alaric (Matthew Davis) suggests Hope (Danielle Rose Russell) turn to the therapy box, which thrusts her into a twisted game set in a summer camp slasher flick. Meanwhile, Lizzie's (Jenny Boyd) attempt to spend some time with MG (Quincy Fouse) doesn't go quite as planned, and Josie (Kaylee Bryant) makes a big decision about her future. Aria Shahghasemi, Chris Lee, Leo Howard, and Ben Levin also star. Darren Grant and Jeffrey Hunt directed the episode written by Brett Matthews (#305). Original airdate 2/18/2021.
Episode 5:
Season 3 premiere, essentially.
The kids pool party. Kaleb rapping.
Hope outside the school crying. Can she go home? She walks forward. Bumps into Lizzie, who snaps at her. Who are you? It's a long story.
Ric's drunk. No, I'm only buzzed. None of them remember her. Hope starts proving herself. Ric says we don't doubt what you know, we doubt how you know it. Josie offers to teach her a spell if it's okay with her dad.
The Salvatore School was born for one purpose. To protect them from the world that doesn't understand them. But now school is closed until we find one of our own. We will not rest til we find out what happened to Landon Kirby. Ric's phone buzzes. Texts.
Hope asleep with a book. Ric wakes her. I've got an idea.
They go to a shop. Looking for Pinky. Shop's closed. Ric says we'll be gone as soon as we get what we came for. Ric is here for the black market supernatural artifacts. She lets her eyes glow. Pinky says lock the door. Ric's looking for a vessel. A jar, a vase. Whatever's inside can grant your heart's desire. Hope pushing Pinky to negotiate the price. Pinky pulls a shotgun on them. Hope starts chanting a death spell. Ric says get out of here, the spell won't work if she can't see you. She says this is what it takes. Ric drugs her unconscious.
Morning. Lizzie and Josie in the kitchen. Lots of breakfast. Josie doesn't eat bacon and doesn't do magic. She's off to Mystic Falls High. Lizzie says they're getting new uniforms for the flag football team. MG comes in to get a breakfast sandwich to go. He rented a place so some kids can get away and reset. He was going to invite her, but... He offers to wash dishes or something before he leaves.
Kaleb tells Ric to talk to Mac some time. She's okay in Savannah. Ric was just embracing honesty. Boiled peanuts are nasty. Pinky has Ric's SUV. Hope is awake. Ric has another idea. The Therapy Box. Vardemus says there's a single user setting. It'll deal with your specific problem - how to get Landon back. Ric says whatever it takes, right? She opens it. Ready Player One.
Hope wakes in a creepy cabin in the woods. Lizzie bursts in. How was it? Tell me all about porking Landon. The locals think the maintenance guy haunts the place. Hope doesn't remember anything about tonight. Lizzie says here's your bra. Hope asks why did we come to the lake? Lizzie gets stabbed with a pitchfork! Masked guy. Hope screams and runs through the woods. Trips and tumbles.
Lizzie and MG doing a spell or meditation. The prison world with Malivore. Astro projecting. They can't see, touch, or hurt us. MG says forget he screamed. LIzzie asks how it's going with Alyssa Chang. Alyssa destroyed the Ascendant to make this world without telling anyone. Lizzie says we're here to find a way to convince Josie to stay at Salvatore School.
Josie is at the school for orientation. Then chickens out. Until Ethan shows up. His family left town. Finch comes out to give Josie the tour.
Ethan offers Hope a hand up. She says you can't be out here in the woods doing hot guy stuff. The Mystic Falls Maintenance Man just killed Lizzie Saltzman. I need to find Landon. He wants her. Says he saw Landon at the dock with Josie. Ethan gets attacked by the bad guy and killed. She screams and runs again.
Ric finds Pinky in a bar. Called ahead for a drink. Let's make a deal. Keys for a cylinder.
Hope reaches the lake. Empty boat. Josie shows up. Huge bow in her hair and giant glasses. Landon saved me, but now he's hurt. That's his blood. He went to the school to call my dad. You solve problems, I run away from them. Hope tells her to run to the sheriff and get help. MM grabs Josie and pulls her underwater. tons of blood. Hope has a wrench. He wants her to face him. But she runs.
**Wow, the town has no sheriff again? Seriously? She seemed to have more guts and balls than that. If she wanted to protect her kids, she'd take both of them. And why can Ric NEVER have a romance prospect that can meet the challenge? They're either evil or they die or they run away. They can't ALL turn out wrong. Life isn't that sucky.
MG and Lizzie. Try telling Josie how you feel. In my own way. Not that she's noticed. So that's a no. She wants a nuclear option. Josie needs to stay with me. I brought you here to find answers. He wants to go. Lizzie says you can't leave until we get what we came for.
Pinky says we don't have a deal. Ric's bat isn't enough. Pinky's been having dreams since he got the artifact. I know the dreams will come true. Pinky won't give it up. Ric says the bat never broke no matter how hard I smashed things. Trust me when I say I'm well aware of the line I'm about to cross. Now give me the artifact. You're going to get this bat one way or the other. Your call, Pinky.
Hope reaches the school. Enters and leaves the front door open. Jed shows up. Loses his head. She hears Landon's voice. Kids are dead all over the house. Hope, help! She keeps searching. Ric on a bed. Bloody. MM beating the door in. Hope says everyone I love is dead. You won. She fights with the monster. Stabs him in the neck. I win. Pulls the mask off and it's Landon. As I suspected it'd be. He gasps awake. Stands. Pulls he knife out. Now that's the Hope Mikaelson I know and love. She wonders what's happening? I don't understand. He says come with me. I can help. She takes his hand.
Monster swimming. MG couldn't find a sign of Landon. Lizzie says you're right. I need to tell Josie I want her to stay. But she wants something else. Her happiness is just as important as mine is. And the reason I wanted you here wasn't about Josie. It was about what Alyssa did before I worked up the courage to stop her. He says destroying the Ascendant. She says sure. Enjoy your pool party. MG is out of the projection. Wade left a note from Kaleb.
Hope cleaned up. She and Landon sit at the fire. He'll disappear once she realizes this is a game. Therapy Box is teaching you. Your friends died in this scenario, so what do you think it means? I couldn't save them. Because all I cared about was saving you. She says the point is I should give up on you? He says no. You need to believe. She says don't talk to me like you're him. Landon would never let me give up on him. Her escape word won't show up until she's ready. He takes her hands. You watched me dissolve. Your blood is toxic to Malivore. I'm Malivore's son. So deep down, what do you really think happened to me? Say it together on three. One. Two. Three.
MG on the phone. Kaleb. He's at the house. And sees a guy naked! Jed picking up food delivery. Kaleb says party's over.
Josie's tour is over. Asks why Ethan gave her the stink eye. Finch didn't take the news his sister left town well. She and Mya dated for a hot minute. Josie wants to come here. If she can sit at Finch's table. Josie flirts and Finch is open to it.
Hope back in the cabin. Avoiding. She'd rather stay with him, close enough, than leave. The stupid word can keep appearing but I'm not leaving. Ric unplugged it. She's pissed. Accuses him of putting her in the box so she'd give up on Landon. She attacks him. He pleads with her to show her something. The artifact on the table. She says you reek of blood. He can't open it. Probably spelled. But it spins in her hand. Go ahead. Make your wish.
**Hope showing a bit of her father this episode. I miss the Mikaelson clan.
Kaleb and MG. And beers. MG doesn't drink like that. Kaleb saw Jed naked. Make an exception. MG feels stupid for thinking dating Alyssa would end well. Kaleb made a promise once upon a time. But I wasn't around. Kaleb thinks Landon is dead and not coming back. I should've been here worrying about things I could actually change. MG says you don't know that. Did you find Landon in that prison world? No. But I stood up for myself. In a gentlemanly way. Felt good. Kaleb says keep doing that. MG will as long as Kaleb vows to not give up on Landon. Kaleb say yes and MG will say no.
Josie and Lizzie talk. Lizzie put together an outfit for her. You only get one chance to make a good first impression. Josie says you're okay with this? Lizzie says no, but I'll get there as long as twin cuddles are available on demand and you always remember this is your home. Josie says I'm so lucky you're my sister. I know.
Hope at the lake. Ric finds her. Hope says so much for that wish. Ric found a lead. A Grecian urn that can reanimate spirits. We should go after anything that solves this. But it's hurting other people, too. She knows. School needs to reopen. It would've been worth it if Landon still....but he's gone, and this is how we should honor him. He says you got that from the Therapy Box? In it's way. He's sorry. He knows how much it hurts to lose people we love. She drops the artifact in the lake. She's realizing she'll never see Landon again.
Under the water, the artifact glows.
Eerie music. Landon walking in the dark. A door with a light. He walks toward it. Grabs the handle.
March 11 - Hope struggling to move on.
