“Fail Safe”
TENSION – Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) pays a visit to Morgan Edge (Adam Rayner). Meanwhile, Lois (Elizabeth Tulloch) and Chrissy (guest star Sofia Hasmik) work together on a story. Lastly, Jonathan (Jordan Elsass) finds a welcome distraction during a very stressful school day. Alex Garfin, Inde Navarette, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Erik Valdez, Dylan Walsh, and Wole Parks also star. Episode 13:
Edge in the Kryptonite box. Remembering the torture of his father.
Sorry, Father. I must rest. His father says you're no savior. We've been at this for months and still you falter. Tal-Rho insists he's the one.
Kal asks what he did with the Eradicator. Where is it? Tal! Where is Leslie Larr? Tal says I can't see behind these walls. What I hear is in my mind. Leslie Larr replaced the original mind long ago. Kal found something at the Fortress. His father's crystal. You don't want to tell me where she is? I'll find her and bring her here. Then you and I will never see each other again.
Clark tells the boys the DoD is staying until the mines are closed and Leslie is found. Lois says Edge was experimenting on people and goes through the official cover story. Chrissy is texting. Boys have to go to school. Clark offers a to-go plate. She says our guest is probably hungry.
Mayor tells Kyle to stay home for a couple weeks. I'll change the narrative. Just give me some time.
School. Sarah bumped by a girl. She wants to ditch. Jordan goes after her. Johnathan confronted about his grandfather running the DOD. Teacher tells them to head to the gym. A girl says today's going to be weird, isn't it? Johnathan would rather be anywhere else. She says let's find something better to do.
Chrissy wants a catchy headline. Biggest story of the year, of my career. Lois wants more eye-witness testimonies. Chrissy says people keep calling with gossip and they're desperate for answers. We need some verification from the DOD. Lois says she'll reach out.
Clark brings food to Irons in the barn. You eat free here the rest of your life. Irons has a Kryptonian tracking system. Clark says the DOD could use your skills. Irons thanks him, but will move on once they find Leslie. Make a home. Clark understands. They get an alert. Clark says she's heading for the DOD. Irons suit boots up.
Superman searching. Has the building been evacuated? 60%. Impact in 5 seconds. Superman intercepts her. Irons there to shoot her. She's unconscious. They fist bump.
We have loose ends to tie up. Sam says I built the weapons for the wrong reasons. He's going to bury it all in concrete and sink to the bottom of the ocean. You and Lois and the boys don't have to worry anymore.
The girl driving Johnathan. They're out in the farmland. His girlfriend is past tense. He asks if she's hanging with anyone. Nope. No one. Cool. She has an idea where they can go. Okay.
Jordan and Sarah. She thanks him for coming. Mom is a public relations queen. She's worried about her dad to go over the cliff. Waiting for that last nudge. Jordan offers the movies or Main Street. Something fun. They reach a pond.
Kyle and Lana discussing what to do. Firefighters come in. Kyle wasn't included when Mitch is brought for a meal. Kyle insists he'd never do anything to hurt them. You know me! Lana encourages him to go.
Lois comes to Sam to give a comment. He says they've already said enough. A pamphlet is being written to address the X-Kryptonite. Lois says it's not enough. He asks what he's supposed to say? Run your story with the bare minimum. The town will be okay. Trust me!
Edge hearing voices. Remembering. Finally, you are ready. Leave to find the Eradicator and stay until it does. Study them. Exploit their weaknesses and profit from it. Tal wants to meet Mother. His father only included her crystal so she'd witness his ascension, then he'll destroy her. Now leave!
Kal asks where is the Eradicator. Edge says it's no use to you. Kal says we have Leslie. Coming to rescue you, though whatever the plan was wasn't good. Edge says It's called loyalty. They haven't accepted you - the people fear you and they should. You should be a god! Where would you be if you weren't raised by simple farmers? You hold yourself back because it's the only way we can walk amongst humans without killing them. But doesn't it feel good to lose control just once. Kal says goodbye, Tal. Edge says I see it in your eyes, brother. You felt it! YOU ARE JUST LIKE ME!
**Classic nature vs nurture and the differences in nurturing. Clark had wonderful parents, birth and adopted, so he's a good guy. Edge had a tyrant for a father that abused him, so his heart is all but dead.
Chrissy isn't happy about No comment. Is it because we're a small paper? They always gave comment to the Daily Planet. What is he hiding? Are you lying right now? You're totally lying. You're supposed to be on the side of the people. Lois, if you can't tell me the truth, maybe you should leave.
Johnathan and the girl sitting in a field chatting. They say Edge was experimenting on his employees. I heard someone flew. What does your grandfather think? John asks why she brought him here? What changed? He's going to walk home. She says everyone wants to know what happened. He says you want to be the one to tell them. See ya.
Kyle pissed off. Lana says you can't take it personally. Kyle says maybe if the people knew you risked your life to save the town. It's not fair! Lana says the mayor has our back. We just have to be patient. We're not alone in this. He needs to do something. She says help me look for a job. Kyle says maybe they move to another place. They've known us our whole lives and turned on us. She thinks it'll blow over.
Sarah used to come to the pond bridge with her abuela. Our family is from Mexico originally. She told me stories. Jordan says he didn't know what made sense until her. Make a nice speech until she says kiss me now. Law enforcement says that's enough, you two. Uh oh.
Sam and Superman going over the stockpile. Clark says we need 7734. We need the weapons. I could've been the enemy. People like me, we're indestructible. Without a fail-safe, that would be the end.
Irons painting his suit in the barn. A moth logo. Natalie would be proud. The AI asks what the new mission is. Perhaps another attempt to see your sister? It thinks he needs friends. Johnathan enters. The suit is pretty amazing. I've always been an athlete. Irons says me, too. You can be more than one thing. Clark comes in. Why aren't you in school?
Sam calls Lois. It's about Clark. I'm worried about him.
Lana finds Kyle on the back porch. Then returns to Sophie in the kitchen. Dad asked me if I want to try another school. Phone rings. Lana says Hey, Kia. Arrested??
Johnathan tells Clark what happened with the girl. And? I didn't say anything. Lois arrives. Tells Johnathan to go upstairs, I'll deal with you later! Then pushes Clark about 7734. Clark swore to protect the people of this planet. The people of this world deserve to protect themselves from me. Phone rings.
Lois is pissed off Jordan got arrested. I'll drive. She says I'm right and you're wrong. Clark keeps trying to convince her it's the right thing. She tells him she lied to Chrissy today. He says We both play fast and loose with journalistic integrity from time to time. She says to protect your secret, not keep a story from people. She's not okay with the military having lethal weapons that bad people could use to kill you. I'm sorry for being angry at you, but I have to stay angry so I can scare the hell out of our son and bail him out of jail. So you stay here.
Sheriff let the kids home with a warning. Lana hears the mayor talking crap about Kyle and blaming Edge on them. Lana confronts him. We got lied to like everyone else! All you're doing is covering your ass! You're doing what's best for you at the expense of my family. For that, shame on you!
She and Lois commiserate. Lois says it's easier for the people to blame Lana than blame themselves. Lana's worried about her family. It's not right! And it's not the same town I used to love.
Lois tells Jordan to go to his room. We'll talk about this later. Clark sitting waiting for her. John's still in his room. Lois says Clark is wrong. He says we have to have a plan. She says your heart is stronger than your mind. This backup plan comes with major risks and you've proven you're not a threat! He says that's not true. My dad taught me control. I've controlled my powers every day for almost 40 years. When Zod took over, I felt what it's like to let go. Really let go. I wish it wasn't true, but it felt good. Really, really good. That feeling worries me. If I could be manipulated again.....the world needs a way to stop me. She finally says if it'll make him feel better, than have a fail safe. But there's no way I'll trust the DoD with this.
Clark talks to Irons about it instead. This is about situations we can't predict. Irons says I'm trying to move on. Clark thinks he can do that and be 7734's gatekeeper. You came to protect this world from me. It's what I'm asking you to do. Irons says he'll call Sam.
Lois comes to Chrissy and says she can't betray her dad's trust. I can't write this story. I'm too close to be objective. But you can. It's a statement from Sam off the record. Focus the blame on Morgan Edge. Lois hopes she can earn back Chrissy's trust.
Edge's memory about learning he wasn't alone. He's my brother! His father says he's nothing! Tal wanted to bring Kal to his side. I don't need to do this your way, Father! But his father says my way is the only way. Tal takes the crystal out and leaves the Fortress.
He's plagued by the voices. Your way is the only way. Goodbye, Father. He closes his eyes, then they glow blue.
Lois chews out the boys. You can't skip school! Clark says there are rules, and you do not disrespect your teachers. They finally apologize. Clark says when things calm down, you can go back to being normal teenagers. Small towns are a lot of fun. Lois tells them to go to bed. Then wants to know what Clark meant. Sits on his lap. Kisses him.
Sam orders a team to check on Edge. They enter the room. He's sitting. Vitals? Not registering. Then he looks at them. Sam says maximize the Kryptonite field! Edge stands. Glowing. Bursts the cage! The soldiers blasted back. Edge floats out. Eyes still glowing blue. Blasts a hole out. Sam activates the Superman alarm. It's Edge!
Superman listens above Earth to find him.
Sam and crew in the room. Superman returns and says he's gone. Sam wonders where the hell did he go?
Edge is at the sun! Drawing energy from it into him! His father tells him to complete what he was sent to do. Or know you were the sole reason Krypton was lost.
