“Frenemies, Chapter Three: The Blackmail"
FINDING BALANCE — Courtney (Brec Bassinger) and the JSA receive an anonymous tip that could help in their murder investigation. Meanwhile, after being told to find balance, Sylvester (Joel McHale) looks into potential jobs in Blue Valley, while also trying to figure out who he is without his Starman identity. Episode 3:
In town. GTO. Sylvester's convertible. Residents are friendly as he walks. Stops for coffee. Tastes the coffee and spits it out. Goes in the diner. Everything here is quaint. Breakfast at the counter. this tea is remarkably good. Best in America, I'm told. Yolanda asks if the food is okay. He criticizes it. He knows who she is. She asks about Ted Grant. He would've thought you were a badass. He saw people for who they were and didn't let them slide. He has a question. this town....what do you do around here? School, church, work. Work is the idea. Mahkents look at him through the window.
Courtney's house. She set out a feast. no special occasion. She's back to trying to figure out who the killer was. Barb says it's too much murder talk at breakfast. Sylvester is spending the day getting to know Blue Valley. Pat says if you can't find balance here, you can't find it anywhere. The former villains take over breakfast and give them health food instead. threw away the pancakes! intimidation doesn't make people enjoy breakfast, folks. And they really have to lock that door!
Beth and Rick in his car. Her parents are too interested in her hero life. He says his uncle is gone. Don't know where. Sure as hell don't care. Beth's goggles light up. Source unknown. Forwarding her documents.
Cindy sent files from the laptop. Tries to get into Dragon King files and needs the password.
School. Cindy pacing. Courtney arrives. Hi. Any updates on the JSA front? The Gambler was blackmailing someone. Courtney thought Gambler was trying to be better for his daughter. Cindy says it doesn't mean anything unless they follow through on the talk. She asks about Starman. Courtney says he's taking the day off. What about you? I'm balanced. I made waffles this morning. See you at lunch. Courtney says hi to Cameron and he walks off without a word.
Barb at work. Paula says they have a situation. The German chocolate cake was a big hit. They want me to give a speech at tomorrow's meeting! Paula doesn't know what the club does. Barb suggests talking about why Blue Valley is important to her. the new manager interrupts them and insults Barb's proposal. Paula tells her good luck. You, too.
Garage. Pat using the grinding wheel. Sylvester reading the want ads. Mechanic asks Sylvester what his family history is. He says his parents treated him like a prop. Being Starman gave him a purpose. I was somebody. Without that, I'm nobody. They disagree. People are quick to write off a good thing. Junk is junk. Salvage is an opportunity. to turn it into something new. Sylvester has to figure it out. Pat says we'll find you a great job. Keep a good attitude.
School. Lunch meeting. Deposits came to Gambler from Lawrence Crock. Courtney says they can't tell Sylvester. Courtney says being blackmailed doesn't mean they killed him. We have to be sure. No one say a word to Sylvester. Agreed?
Class letting out. Teacher has a word with Cameron. He's not painting or turning in homework. Is everything alright? She says she puts up a wall because she dealt with things. Offers to talk. He bites back. Rick says don't be a jerk. She's only trying to help. Cameron apologizes. Rick says just because you're a spoiled rich kid, doesn't mean you can talk to people however you want. Talk to her like that again and you will pay. Cool? Yeah. Cool. Teacher tells Rick that calling Cameron names isn't going to help. Okay.
Cameron leaving school pops Rick's tire with an icicle.
Sylvester returns to the house with Cosmo. Doorbell. It's Cindy. Is Courtney here? He says she's not back from school, yet. She tells him the Gambler was blackmailing the Crocks. How about we get them right now, you and me? He doesn't trust her. I trust you less. She says she's JSA now. He says find someone who's impressed by a cheerleader with daddy issues. I'm not some Blue Valley dope. I'm Starman. Careful with those shoes. If you fall, it'll be like tumbling off an overpass. Sylvester leaves the house to get the Crocks. Mike overheard everything.
**Dude is a mean bully. Pat put up with a lot of crap if Sylvester was always like this.
Night time. Grocery store. Closing in 5 minutes. Lots of shoppers still. Crock tries to steal steak sauce. She tells him to put it back. Sylvester arrives. Did you kill the Gambler on a cheat day? A day like the Purge? Crock tells him he's out of his mind. They says they're shopping. Store's closing. Paula says they don't want to fight. Crock tell him to go back to his little basement and polish his staff. Sylvester fires at them.
Garage. Courtney has a plan, but Mike calls.
Shoppers screaming and running. Crocks fight back to defend themselves. Using store stuff. Paula tackles Sylvester. Crock picks up a bat. Cosmo keeps him from hitting Starman. You done? No. Starman blasts the store with energy. They continue fighting. Crocks get the staff. Cosmo shakes them off. Starman blasts them out the windows. follows outside. Sylvester blows up a car. 2 cars. Robot arrives. Pat says that's enough! Fight's over! Walk away, Sylvester.
Crocks at the house. We didn't kill him. Why the blackmail? ISA crimes we didn't commit. We're guilty of plenty of things. But not that. They paid Sharp to stay out of prison. Then he stopped blackmailing 2 months prior. And paid us back every cent. Ice packs. Crock says he did pay him a visit on the day he was murdered. I didn't believe him. I drove to the trailer, but left before I did something stupid. Paula says I'm sorry, Barbara. We should've been honest with you. They'd never make the same mistake twice. Whoever killed Sharp, it wasn't us. Sylvester returns. Heads down to the basement. Pat follows. Sylvester is pissed. You're my side kick, not theirs! Got that? Pat says I'm no one's sidekick. I'm your friend. Sylvester keeps yelling. Pat has been trying to send the right message to Courtney. She thought you might be her father. Thinking her dad was a superhero that died saving the world was easier than a guy that bailed. the guy showed up for her locket because it was worth some money. She gave it to him. he took it and left. What did you do? I knocked him on his ass. I'm not proud of it. But that pain? It'll never leave her. We have to be there for her. You can't just be a friend to Courtney. She puts you on a pedestal. Whether you like it or not, you have a responsibility to set an example for all these kids. to be the Starman you set out to be. Sylvester doesn't know who he is. I don't even have my costume anymore.
Lunch meeting. Courtney updated them. Crocks couldn't have ripped Gambler's trailer apart. Cindy arrives. I wanted to take the Crocks down. I wanted to prove myself. If Sylvester gave me his seal of approval, you would to. But he's kind of an ass. Courtney says do that again and you're off the team.
Rotary Club. Paula up to speak. Hello, everyone. Barb arrives. Paula gains confidence. I love Blue Valley and the people in it.
School. Cameron says hi to Courtney. I've been a jerk. To everyone. Most importantly, to you. She asks if he's okay. Everyone keeps asking me that. Is it? He's not ready to talk about it, yet. She says it's okay. We can just go for a walk together.
Sylvester looking at a file. There must be something at the crime scene we all overlooked. Right? We should go back. Nope.....not my turn with you. I gotta respect the rules. Be a better Starman.
Courtney and Cameron walking after dark. Hands touching. He says he should go. I'm sorry. She's understanding.
Disco. LOL. Sylvester leaves the house. Barb is working on that proposal again.
Paula appears to Tim. We need to talk about a friend of mine. You're going to be a lot nicer to.
Cindy staring at the laptop. Still can't get into what she wants to read.
Security video feeds. TVs underground. Who's watching?
Trailer park. Sylvester looking with a flashlight.
Pat sewing a new costume. Mike sees him, and closes the door.
Sylvester gets plucked up! Drops the light.
Then he's dropped and bleeding? A monster roars. Is Starman already dead?
Next ep - Courtney wants to help Cameron. He ices.
