Episode 16:
Related note - the SHIELD cast was at the Civil War premiere tonight. :)
Malick's house, 1970. Gideon's father died. The brothers discuss Whitehall. Gideon says we're not getting him. Dad never believed in Whitehall's Hydra.
Malick comes home. His daughter is waiting. They hug. He says we need to talk. She thinks our guest is handsome. He showed up and asked me to gather the inner circle. Hive greets them. Gideon asks to what do we owe this pleasure? Hive wants to reveal his true self.
Coulson staring at the Ward photo. May says you didn't kill him hard enough. LOL. He says I'm sorry about Andrew. She doesn't want to talk about that any more than you want to talk about this. She would've made the same choice. He knows the company line. but feels like we're only fixing problems we created. She hopes she'll get to kill him, too.
Daisy and Mack. He's looking better. He says she's not. Fitz and Simmons say Ward is actually the creature from the other planet. Who knows what it has planned here? Mack asks Daisy if she saw anything in the future that helps? Coulson summons them to the office.
Discuss the thing that looks like Ward, and Gideon's takeovers. Coulson says Lincoln and Daisy have to stop in the Badlands. Lincoln says there's an Inhuman that might have knowledge. He'll explain on the way.
Gideon and his daughter. He tells her he saw the future. He saw his death. So much pain. Torn apart from the inside. Every cell was being destroyed. She wants him to tell their guest so he can save you. He says no. My killer was him.
A prison. The Malick brothers brought to Whitehall. He says you boys are of age now. Time you choose a path within Hydra, and I think you should choose mine. He's a man of science, not religion. Gideon calls him a coward. Whitehall says your father was no fool. Survived all the ceremonies by avoiding the white stone. There's a book in your father's study. You'll find it most illuminating.
Daughter doesn't think Hive will hurt Gideon. He says he thinks Hive will do it tonight. He thinks he no longer needs me and it makes sense. She says you've always been a faithful follower. Whatever this is, you can fix it. Remind him how important you are. I'll have a Scotch waiting when you're done.
The plane in space. Daisy remembering again. Lincoln asks what's on her mind? She asks about this Inhuman. He says potential Inhuman. He didn't have powers at Afterlife. Australian, former military. He ranted about a second coming of an Inhuman that could raise the dead.
Coulson and Fitz and Simmons discussing the Hive alien. Mack says they're nearing the facility. Giyera has been there.
Malick finds Hive looking around the grounds. Hive says your daughter impresses me. She's a true believer. Gideon says he raised her like his father raised him. He asks if Hive remembers things from his hosts. Hive says it'll all be made clear tonight.
Coulson says we need to make sure Giyera doesn't get away. Fitz put handprint locks in their guns. Can't be shot with their own weapons. Coulson says Giyera is former military, so he's dangerous without his powers, too.
Daisy and Lincoln arrive. He says we shouldn't use our powers. Lincoln tells James we only want to talk. Daisy steps on a landmine. If she moves, it'll go off.
Lincoln says we're not here to fight. James thinks Jiaying sent them. Daisy tries holding the mine down with her power so they can move back. Then she pops all the mines. And Lincoln zaps him unconscious.
Gideon thinks back to his brother. Whitehall was right. Dad would swap this stone so he'd never draw it. He was afraid to be the Traveler. Everything he said to us was a lie. Gideon says our family has upheld this faith for centuries and it will not end with us. We'll be better men. Together to the end.
Daughter asks him if he's okay. The others want to know why they're here. He addresses the inner circle. Time to begin. We're not here for a ceremony, but a celebration. We've devoted our lives to bringing the Hydra god back from exile. Hive walks in. They think he's Grant Ward. Yes, but this body is only a vessel. We've finally returned, thanks to the Malick family. For all you having doubts, see and believe. He reveals his true face.
Team in the building. Files and lab equipment gone. The rest destroyed.
James wakes. Lincoln says we only need information. James laughs. Lincoln says we're with SHIELD. Daisy says Jiaying's dead and Afterlife is a pile of ashes. Tell us what you know. James says he doesn't do things our of the kindness of his heart. Lincoln offers to make him one of us. Now James is interested.
Coulson says gather what's left for Simmons. Giyera is coming this way. He gets Giyera to chase him. To trap him with May. Not so fun when we take away your toys, is it?
May vs. Giyera. He draws blood. This is brutal. She knocks him out in the end.
Fitz says Coulson uploaded data to an oil field. Giyera's waking in the box. Coulson tells his men to get out of it.
James gives them a Cree something. The Ancient was a commander for the Inhuman army. All of us at Afterlife descended from the first inhumans. The artifact is theirs for the crystal. Lincoln tricks him. Not everyone deserves powers. James says Lincoln nearly murdered his last girl. Men like him don't change!
Daughter pours scotch for Gideon. He toasts her. They drink. Guest gave her Paradise Lost. Gideon says that's very thoughtful. She says you're not still questioning him. Gideon says no, not anymore. They say goodnight and I love you.
Simmons talks about Starlings and other invasive species. Maybe It was afraid of it. She has a theory. thinks It is a parasite. Coulson is upset.... Fitz asks is there something wrong? Coulson says you were there. You saw. You did the right thing. But I crossed the line. Fitz says Ward did deserve it. Coulson says payback isn't what we do here. When I killed him, he won. I knew it'd come back to haunt me.

I tried to fill it with vodka. I couldn't control the drinking or my temper. My girlfriend thought she could help me be a better person. We fought a lot. The more I drank, the angrier I got. I got in the car, she got in with me, and we ended up wrapped around a telephone pole. Gordon saved us. Brought me to Afterlife. First time I felt like that emptiness might be filled one day. He says I'd never hurt you. Sorry I didn't tell you sooner. I don't want any more secrets. She says there's something I have to tell you. Another glimpse into the future.
Mack tells Giyera you'll tell us everything you know. Giyera says without SHIELD, he wouldn't have come home. Those who are worthy will inherit a better world. May says we're nearing Dutch airspace.

Commentary - Laurel/Black Canary have deserved better. Anyone remember when Laurel was the lead female character of the show? Misstep after misstep.... Hat's off to Katie Cassidy. She's been classy and patient through all the trolls online, frustration with being separated from the rest of the plot, and training to be the strongest she could to do her own stunt work. Always classy in interviews and on social media despite people giving her so much shit.
The Black Canary is one of DC's longest running female superheroes, with a story entwined with The Green Arrow's. To do this......why even call this a superhero/comic show anymore? This show was amazing when Greg Berlanti was involved on a more daily business. I wish he'd stayed as more than an overseer. A lot of people are done with Arrow after tonight and that's really sad. That takes really pissing most people off for them to completely abandon a show that used to be must-see TV.
I'm an editor and writer for a living, so don't even get me started on this whole producers' quote of "We didn't know who we were going to kill, just that we wanted a permanent death in a grave at the beginning of season 4." Um, what? Okay - when writing a book, there are two ways - plotting and seat-of-the-pants. Plotters work off a detailed outline and pretty much stick to it. Pantsers have an idea and an end goal and figure out the ways to get to the end as they go. TV dramas are written based on outlines! The whole point is to have known beats you're hitting through a season. Writers meet at the end of the previous season to start plotting the new one, so it's TOTALLY BOGUS that they wanted to do a death without figuring out who it would be at the same time of that decision. Unfocused writing for TV gets a TV show canceled because the audience sees that you're making it up as you go and have no clue what you're doing!
Will I - K.C. - enjoy the rest of season 4? I don't know. This show needs to seriously impress me and at least make this stupid death count for a hell of a lot. Laurel was part of Oliver's life since they were kids. THAT MEANS SOMETHING.
I've collected all the interviews I've seen post-airing at the forum.
