“We Have History Together”
CLASS IS IN SESSION —Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) attend an anger management support group looking for their next victim. Sybil (guest star Nathalie Kelley) is still alive and teaching a group of high school students who she’ll later use as leverage to get Caroline (Candice King) to locate a historical artifact that can be used against her. Meanwhile, Stefan and Damon continue their commitment to Cade as they test the morals of a young doctor, Tara (guest star Alexandra Chando). Zach Roerig also stars. Ian Somerhalder directed the episode written by Matthew D’Ambrosio (#808). Original airdate 1/13/2017.
Episode 8:
Damon has anger issues. He's at a meeting. With Stefan. Damon gave Stefan new orders. We push people to make evil choices and we send them to Hell. He's been difficult, full of himself. Stefan says I'm better at the job. Pick Meg or Elizabeth. Would you pick Meg over you? Yes. I'd want her to die instead of me. What if Meg and Elizabeth had to die? Damon asks what about all these people? Man says I don't care about any of them. I want to live. Damon kills the man. Stefan kills all the others. Damon says whoa, I thought we were giving Cade only the worst of the worst. Stefan says he's keeping control this time. History won't repeat. I'm all good. Damon says yeah....I can see that.
Caroline writes to Elena. 3 weeks since. Ric and Bonnie have probably filled pages. Caroline is at Mystic Falls HS. Stefan is with Damon now. I know it isn't good. There's always work. She's on the phone with Matt. Lunch? He's on the way to the Armory. Asks if she's okay? She's....fine. All of this is temporary. Matt says sneak into Coach Lymon's office and drinks are on me. Write something rude in his playbook. LOL.
Armory. Dorian greets Matt. Dorian knows the truth. Welcome to the circle of trust. Dorian wants payback on Seline. Harvey was the skeleton in the tunnel. He was related to Mystic Falls. Mr. Maxwell is the descendant. Matt's dad.
Caroline in a classroom. Sybil is the new teacher! They say she's the best teacher. Sybil made them love history. Is that a crime? Caroline asks what do you want? Sybil told Caroline's boss to send her here. Antebellum Virginia is the lesson.
Damon and Stefan looking for new victims. Damon wants a challenge. Stefan suggests the woman helping an old lady. Damon sees a woman looking like Elena. Stefan suggests she's driven by something dark. Damon says maybe she's driven by something good. Stefan drugs Damon and calls for a doctor when he passes out.
Damon wakes in the hospital. Vervain? Come on, man. Stefan says Tara's mom and dad were killed in a hit and run 10 years ago. Never found the driver. Damon says I only here sad, not dark. Stefan says they were organ donors and saved lots of lives. She even volunteers at organ transfer.
Dorian shows Matt's dad a drawing. Doesn't look familiar. Harvey measured Sybil for a crown. Peter says it's for a bell. Metal work. Matt's still pissy.
Doc says Damon's bloodwork is normal. Stefan says it's karma. He's hurt a lot of people. She says speculation doesn't do any good. Stefan says why not? There's a girl at the top of the list. Damon wastes his life and she gets to die? Doc can't think like that. Stefan says what if he caused your parent's deaths? He compels her to think Damon killed them. Damon says stack the deck, why don't you. Maybe some people can't be corrupted. Maybe she's plain good. Stefan gives him more vervain. Damon says stop cheating for one second. Stefan says I work for the Devil. I don't have to play fair.
Sybil asks when did Mystic Falls become a town? Caroline lists the founding families. Sybil says long before them, there was a group of people on this land. Sybil was here in 1790. The burned witches smell lasted for hours. It was delicious. Field trip! Bus is waiting. Miss Forbes will sit next to me. Caroline grabs her. Sybil threatens to kill the kids if Caroline doesn't play along. Every death today will go on your scorecard toward Hell. Coming?
Sybil and Caroline. Why was your vist to this field when 100 witches were burned at the stake? Sybil says the witches gave magic to a metalsmith for a bell. But we had befriended the smith.
Dorian says the church bell was what Sybil was looking for.
Sybil says the bell went over Wickery Bridge in 1992. It can't be destroyed. Sybil puts the kids in position to be burned at the stake. Dousing themselves with lighter fluid. Caroline has to bring Sybil the bell or everyone dies. Sybil gave her incentive.
Damon tries to appeal to Tara. Tries to compel her. Stefan says sorry. You're too weak to convince her otherwise. Damon pleads with her to give him a chance to redeem himself. Stefan says think about the good you would do for people who deserve to live. Damon's heart is failing. Tara took an oath to help people. Stefan gets that, but says Damon would go back to drinking, maybe kill someone's kids. I understand your struggle, I do. She says this is not about me. He says she is in charge. Follow your instincts and do what you think is right. She says I think you should leave. Now. Stefan walks out. Damon says I'm sorry. Did you hear me? Tara? I'm sorry for what I did. She closes the blinds. She appreciates that. But it's not enough. Damon wishes he could change it, but he can't. Killing me won't change the past. She says I know, but it will change the future. Damon pleads with her. She puts a syringe in the IV. Closes her eyes and lets the fluid go in. Damon passes out. Flatlines.
Stefan looks through Damon's clothes.
Tara calls time of death. Stefan finds the pendant. Shakes his head. "That figures."
**So, we know from when Damon and Enzo were tortured years ago that a vampire's organs can grow back if removed, with time and blood to heal. Except if you take the heart, since ripping out the heart always kills them. How far will Stefan take this??
Caroline calls Matt. I need the bell and Sybil wants it back. 1992. Matt says that's where Elena's parents went off the road. Your mom had the bell in storage. Sybil wants Caroline to take her to the house now. Threatens Matt with the kids' deaths.
Matt and his dad in the truck. He didn't want to be in the Parade. Our family made that bell. It's because of us there was a town at all. The Founders treated the Maxwells like an embarrassment. That bell is a symbol of all they took from us. That bell met the river and I never looked back, until now. They get a GPS link for the bus.
Stefan greets Tara outside. Joke's on you. What if it was all a game and I was giving you a morality test? No one knows what you did on your own. She says you tricked me. Stefan says no, you lived up to your potential. Damon walks in. He drank an orderly. Stefan compels her. Damon says maybe she deserves a second chance. Stefan is disappointed. Has the pendant. You've been carrying it around for weeks. Something's been off. Your sense of fun. She remind you of someone? Elena. And so does this necklace. It triggers your conscience and holds you back. Damon says no. Stefan says if that's true, then she's ready to meet the boss.
**Wow, amazing how many actress resemble Nina, isn't it? We've had a few Elena lookalikes on this show.
Dorian on the phone with Matt. The toys fit together to make a clapper. All part of one bell that makes a super bell. Imagine the tuning fork magnified by a thousand.
Matt and Peter find the kids. Matt says help me untie them now.
Sybil and Caroline going through boxes. Caroline spots a floor difference. She finds a note. Seline. Sybil is not happy. Suddenly feeling the need to vent. She sings.
Fire lit. Spreading. Matt and Peter get more free. One left. Hurry! Last second save. Matt says it's okay, you finished your assignment. Sybil's done with you now.
Damon and Stefan in the car. Stefan says your humanity keeps flickering through because of this little reminder. You're not enjoying our work. Damon says you're wrong. Stefan says prove it. Damon throws it out the window. Stefan is almost happy. Forgetting something? Tara in the backseat. Damon bites her after stopping the car. Stefan's eyes flicker as he watches.
**Stefan was always more evil with his humanity off. Damon understood that you can't burn down the whole world.
Bus picked the kids up. They don't remember a thing. Matt knows a lot about making excuses. Peter says these are details about the worst mistake of my life. Don't walk away from your family. Matt grew up an outsider, then our family had a history after all, but you never gave me a chance to know about it.
Sybil screaming. Be a thousand percent sure I'm not linked to your children. Caroline says you're lying. Sybil says hurt me and roll the dice. How do you not see that marrying a Ripper puts your girls in danger? He falls off the wagon every single time. I just hope the next time he goes Ripper, your kids aren't in the house.
Prisoners cleaning roadside. Damon shows up. Looking for the necklace. Stefan took the morning off. I don't know why I want it, but when I have it I feel....better. Sounds like your brother is a jerk. Can be. So your brother's a troublemaker? He's keeping it together. If he takes a turn for the worse, it'll all go to Hell. Prisoner says sometimes people bounce back. Damon says penance one wrapper at a time. Prisoner says beats leaving them on the ground.
Stefan stalking at the hospital.
Damon spots the pendant. Picks up a plastic bottle and hands it to the prisoner. Stares at the pendant on the grass.
Stefan killed a nurse. Gorges himself on her.
Damon picks up the pendant.
Then find Stefan. The whole hospital is bloody and full of dead. Stefan has blood all over his chin.
Next ep - Ripper. Mystic Falls dance. Damon sees Elena? Sybil tells him to get a grip.
