“Summer School, Part 1”
SCHOOL’S OUT — With summer break around the corner, Pat (Luke Wilson) suggests the family take a vacation after seeing that Courtney (Brec Bassinger) has been spending too much time focused on being Stargirl and not enough time on her schoolwork. Meanwhile, as Beth (Anjelika Washington) attempts to reconnect with Chuck, she stumbles upon a major secret her parents have been keeping from her. Elsewhere, Yolanda (Yvette Monreal) continues to be haunted by Brainwave’s death, and Rick (Cameron Gellman) secretly tracks Solomon Grundy after suspecting he may still be in the area. Amy Smart, Trae Romano, Hunter Sansone, and Meg DeLacy also star. Andi Armaganian directed the episode written by Geoff Johns (#201). Original airdate 8/10/2021.

Episode 1:
Melody Hills, Indiana, Decades Ago. Singing Happy Birthday.
A Victorian house. Rebecca wants to go to the party across the street. Her mother says no. You made a scene at the store today. She says Daddy would let me go. Dad's on call, so you're stuck with me. The little girl sits on the porch swing and watches. Wind picks up and moves the chimes and whirligigs. A little boy appears. I'm Bruce, I just moved in, what's your name? Rebecca. He doesn't see her mom, so go to the party across the street. It'll be fun. Come on! She runs after him and almost gets run over by a truck. Then gets closer to the birthday house. People inside having fun. The little boy encourages her to take a present from the porch. Go on, no one's looking. She approaches. Takes a big gift and hurries away. Sits and the boy encourages her to open it. She peels away the wrapping paper. It's a creepy doll inside and it's eyes light up red! Then it's normal. The boy is now like the doll. Hey, you stole that. Bad girl. He holds up the black diamond and it glows at her.
Mom comes outside and there's no Rebecca. She goes looking across the street. And finds Something on the yard that makes her scream.
Stargirl Summer School.
Flying around the clock tower. Stargirl lands and finds.....a raccoon. All clear! The other Justice kids come over. Did you check inside the trash can? Stargirl has 20 minutes until curfew. Goggles aren't fun without Chuck. Hourman insists the villains are gone. The ISA are done. All of them. The 3 kids think they should call it a night. We're protecting a town that doesn't really need it. Courtney suggests backing off from 7 nights a week patrol to 6. They leave her.
Home. Courtney going through papers in the basement. Her stepdad says it's 4 in the morning. What are you doing down here? She's been up all night. What about your history final? I'll ace that. She's asking about the villains in the JSA files. Pat lists how they were beaten. He tells her to focus on normal life. Your destiny is about getting good grades and working toward a career. She says as Stargirl. The staff chose me! The staff is still lighting up, so I have to still work. Pat says being a superhero is about balance. She insists life being quiet doesn't mean the bad isn't there. We have to turn over rocks. He tells her to go to bed. They head upstairs. The Green Lantern glows in the dark.
Morning. Pat's got a map of the US on the island. Route for the family trip. Yellowstone National Park. He reserved 2 weeks at a lake house with big perks. Hamburgers, hot dogs, and the best damn BBQ chicken this side of the Atlantic. And pets are welcome! But the kid wants to learn JSA stuff. Pat says you're not going to quit your job. Your buddy will fill in until we get back. Barbara and Courtney come into the kitchen and Pat tells them about the trip. The parents want the trip. And so does the dog. Traitor. LOL. It'll be fun!
Beth working on the AI. Reboot fails. No Chuck. She made breakfast to go for her parents. It's the last day of school. They tell her she'll do great and bail. Beth finds a petition for divorce.
Radio talks about Blue Valley. A bear broke into Taco Whiz and also Waffle World. Yogi Bear, look out! LOL. Rick parks the Mustang in the woods. And finds the jugs of missing syrup. And Grundy's footprint. At the edge of the stream.
Yolanda outside church. She goes into Confession. Priest asks if she wants to talk today. I think I'd just like to sit again if that's okay. She cries. Then eventually leaves. And gets a piercing headache and remembers. Turns around. What's in the confessional? The priest comes out and asks if she's alright. She hurries away.
Courtney rants to Yolanda about the family trip. But she's not really listening. Maybe we all should take a break for a while. I still hear Brainwave. The sound he made when I heard him die is stuck in my head. I don't know if I deserve to be Wildcat. Courtney says you do. This JSA doesn't work without my best friend. Yolanda wonders if what she did was okay? Courtney says I wasn't there. I don't know what else you could've done. Cameron is back. Courtney wants to see if he's okay. Yolanda says if he learns the truth, think of what it'll do to him. Henry might still be alive if he didn't find out about his father.
The shop. Pat telling the mechanic what to work on while he's away. Zeke, can you mind the store for me? Zeke hesitates before eventually agreeing. partners. Until Pat gets back.
Rick Harris is Rick Tyler now. He got all the answers correct. Teacher thinks he cheated. Take this test right now and I'll watch your every move. He says I saved everyone in this town. So fail me! I think I will, Mr. Harris.
Courtney runs into a kid in the cafeteria. She and Yolanda sit with Beth. Last day of school blues. Artemis talks about her parents being in prison. Thinks someone set them up. Courtney attacks her when she moves a hockey stick. Artemis was just giving it back to another kid while next to their table. A teacher takes Courtney away.
Principal meeting with Courtney and her parents. He's the new guy. Courtney says it was a misunderstanding with Artemis today. Pat calls it a good old fashioned cat fight.....which is wrong. Courtney failed History. She says that's impossible. I studied! And she failed English, too. She needs to be in summer school if she's going to move on to junior year.
Pat confronts her about the fight. Summer school? Vacation canceled? Our family is a team, too, okay? She says I know. But the staff is still lighting up! I won't quit, not like you did. He says put Stargirl away for 2 weeks. Pass summer school.
Convertible GTO pulls in. It's Joel McHale! He checks his reflection, then gets out. Goes in the diner. Waitress Maggie asks what she can get him. Alicia Witt? He says she's looking for her ex-husband. Which one? The one that likes stripes. Ooooo.
Courtney sees Cameron again and says hi. So you're back.... I am. He thinks the mural can use a makeover. His grandparents discuss them. He wants Cameron to be happy. She says he should know the truth about that wicked girl.
Pat returns to the garage and looks for Zeke. Noises from Employees Only. Zeke's working on the robot. Don't tell me what it's for, I don't need to know. I built a flame thrower once. You could fit it in that hand. I'll get my tools! I'll be right back.
Rick bringing bags to the woods. Two buckets of fried chicken. Nope, 3. Then he leaves.
Beth set up a romantic dinner at home for her parents. Times passes and she's sitting at the table alone. Phone buzzes. It's her mom. She's stuck at the hospital. I hope your last day was great. Love you. Her mom hangs up. The goggles have a voice coming through. The voice says I don't know you and turns off. Please don't forget me, Chuck. Beth tears up.
Courtney looking at files again. Then her yearbook. Cindy. Staff lights up. There's a noise in the house. She goes investigating. Someone is sneaking around with the Green Lantern. Courtney attacks her! They trade blows. Courtney fires the kitchen island. The girl is wearing the ring to go with the lantern. Who are you? I'm Green Lantern's daughter. The family comes down. Courtney says I think there's a misunderstanding.
Cindy is back in the high school in the middle of the night. Gets a file from a locker and enters the secret entrance to the ISA HQ below. Tears up Henry's photo. Sets aside Artemis. Another boy. And Cameron. And Pat's son. The black diamond says I am ready to serve you. She says let's go do some recruiting.
