“Frenemies, Chapter Five: The Thief”
SECRETS AND LIES — As Courtney (Brec Bassinger) continues to secretly help Cameron (Hunter Sansone), the team notices she’s pulling away from her role as the JSA leader. Mike (Trae Romano) and Jakeem (Alkoya Brunson) approach Cindy (Meg DeLacy) with a proposition. Finally, Yolanda’s (Yvette Monreal) decision to follow her intuition leads her to make a shocking discovery. Episode 5:
5 days ago. Cindy at the trailer park. When she took the laptop. She hears voices. Hides it in the rubble. Picks up the pistol. Shoots. Team comes running to the sound. Cindy says I didn't do it.
Blue Valley. Coming home holding hands. Courtney wants to research Cameron's condition and help figure it out. He says you're good at making my world feel less dark. They kiss again. She says you're good at that. Sweeping romantic music. He says he'll see her tomorrow. They say goodnight and he leaves. She enters the house smiling. Pat asks why. A good day. What happened? Nothing specific. She asks what's for dinner? I don't know. Barb is working and Mike is at Jakeem's. Pat tells her Sylvester and the kids are in the tunnels. She says good. Until we hear from them, I've got homework.
She goes down to the basement. The trunk of files. Icicle. Tucks it in her jacket before going to her room.
Cindy still trying to get into the Dragon King files on the laptop. Why should I hack your laptop when you'll do it for me with your gadgets. Finally gets the password. Several lab locations! She pulls up video to see JSA is in the tunnels. She grabs stuff and runs.
What is this place? We've never been down here before. The mural. ISA meeting room. Starman wearing the costume. Someone's been working here. What's this for? Sylvester, what are you thinking? Someone's made an awful lot of efforts to cover their tracks. this thread we're pulling.....I think it'll lead somewhere big. I don't like it. Starman rants at the mural for mocking him and blasts it with the staff. We're going to find them and they're going to pay!
Home. Sylvester can't sleep. Staff in its case. He goes upstairs. Barb finds him polishing the silver in the dining room. She asks what happened. He tells her about the tunnel. And losing his temper. Big time. Pretty unhinged. Again. I don't think I'm a person that's good at setting examples, like Pat. Barb thought it'd just be Courtney and her. But when Pat came with Mike, I tried. It's all you can do. Be your best. If you have a bad moment, help them learn from it. She considers Mike her son now. I'm really grateful every day for him.
Mike looking for cereal. Sylvester put everything in alphabetical order. LOL. You don't like me very much, do you? He says not everyone in JSA were best buds. You stopped Icicle and he's in the ground. In a way, you got me justice. And you faced Eclipso. Took guts. When I was your age, no one took me seriously, either. You and I aren't so different. Pat comes in and suggests omelets. No Dragon King yet. But he has hidden labs across the country. Sylvester suggests she can come check one out or go herself. She says she's good and leaves for school.
Mike and Jakeem. Older kids wants to take their money because they're freshmen. Jakeem wishes these boys were nicer to us. So they ask please while threatening them. Cindy shows up and attacks them. If I catch you picking on freshmen again, I'll break you. Bully asks why she cares? She says she doesn't and walks away. But she's smiling. Mike has a new idea.
Flying. Starman lands where one of the labs should be. Blasts the leaves and dirt away to reveal the hatch. He calls Beth. She's taking a text in class. He asks her to disable the lock. She tells him to send his location and she'll see what she can do. He's impatient. Then the lock opens. He says she's a genius. Stop! Goggles are giving me answers to the math test. She hurries to take them off. LOL
Starman goes below. Glad we don't have a dust allergy. Starts looking around. Reptile in a tank is still alive.
Diner. Pat and Barb eating lunch. Date in the middle of the week. She asks why he's so distracted. Courtney doesn't seem like herself. She laughs. Courtney has a crush on someone. Who's the guy? She'll tell us eventually. Paula and Crusher sit with them. Hi. They're looking into Steven Sharp's murder. Interrogated everyone and he paid them back before he died. Maybe he did change. Pat suggests they should have more important things to do. But they say being heroes has supercharged their likes in the bedroom. LOL Pat calls for the check.
Courtney asks Cindy to team up in class. You grew up in Blue Valley, right? Teacher tells them less talking. Courtney says she and Cameron are hanging out. Cindy tells her she can't tell Cameron about his dad. He'll be fine. He's basically a nice guy. Cindy asks why she's talking to her about this and not one of the others. Courtney says you wouldn't judge me. And you'd give it to me straight. Cindy likes Courtney and Cameron together. But no one wants to think about their dad being awful. You don't want him to feel like us.
**Nice that each season is continuing to give Cindy layers.
School. Mike and Jakeem find Cindy. Why do you want? We have a preposition for you. Mike says a woman with your skills needs to be appreciated. Jakeem says even worshiped. Mike suggests she ditch the JSA and join them. She laughs. That's adorable. Jakeem asks if that's a yes. She says it's never going to happen. Ever. But I mean that in the nicest way.
Lunch. Sylvester searched the lab. No Dragon King. Yolanda doesn't trust Cindy. But she's open to what Courtney wants. Who was spacing out. Cameron comes over. Rick is mean. Courtney tells him to knock it off. She apologizes and says they're in the middle of a project. Beth says it's for the Science Fair. Cameron apologizes for interrupting and leaves. Courtney tells Rick to knock it off. And tells Yolanda that Cameron's not his dad any more than I am. That's not fair to him. Or me.
Cindy finds Cameron. You're dating Courtney. We're friends now. Just looking out for my girl. Really? People do change. Have you? Have you told her about summer art camp between 2nd and 3rd grade? the institution where angry little boys could learn how to not break things. She prods him until his eyes ice. He says I don't know why you want to hurt me, but everything you just said proves you haven't changed. She says maybe and leaves.
**Good on him for controlling his anger and power.
The garage. The kids tell Sylvester what happened with Courtney. There are no sides, Yolanda. You shouldn't think that way. Ever! Reminds them about Bruce. I should've listened to Pat. Should've brought the team back together. Learn from my mistakes, please! Yolanda thinks Cindy isn't telling them something. Rick has to fix the hourglass. Beth's getting a call on the goggles. Parents. The Crocks are following up on leads. Give us an assignment. A special mission! Beth says they'll talk later tonight. Sylvester says it's always hard when family gets involved. Brainwave killed his sister Mary. His first rule - protect the family.
Diner. Courtney sitting sad and not drinking her milkshake. Cindy comes in. You see the good in people. I see the bad. I talked to Cameron. He has his family's powers. And you already knew that, didn't you? Courtney says she'll help him control them. Cindy says cut bait, New Girl. I've read the story. It only ends one way.
Rick can't figure the hourglass out. Sylvester says your dad had a lifetime of education before he made that thing. Rick says how can I be Hourman if it only works for 20 minutes. Sylvester says It's gotta be the limiter. It has to be busted. Rick says Wait, if I remove it, it'll be on 24 hours a day? Sylvester says maybe. Be careful. Your dad created that for a reason. See you tomorrow?
**Starman is trying to advise the kids, but I'm not sure they're taking the right direction from his words. Interpretation can still get you in trouble.
Beth's house. Parents come into her room excited. How can we help? She tells them they can help the most if....if you stay out of my life as Dr. Midnite. This is dangerous, Mom. If Dragon King is out there, or whoever it is. I don't want anything to happen to you. It scares me. Please. Stop calling me. Stop helping. Just stop. Her dad says they understand. But they're sad walking out.
Rick removes a gear. Puts the hourglass back together. Puts it on. And powers up.
Cindy in her suit underground. The answers have to be here. They have to be. She's looking in the lab Sylvester visited.
Yolanda in her suit climbs into Cindy's house. Snoops in her bedroom.
Pat looks for Courtney. She's not in her room. Just the dog.
Courtney and Cameron sitting in front of the fireplace. She's got a book on an ice hotel. He says maybe we can go sometime. Or I can bring it to you. Grandparents spy on them. She thinks it's beautiful. Cold.
Yolanda spots the laptop under the bed. I knew it. I'm going to kick her ass.
Next ep - Courtney sticking up for Cameron while everyone else worries.
