“Ladies Drink Free”
A WOLF IN THE NIGHT – Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) let Mick Davies (guest star Adam Fergus) tag along on a case as they search for a werewolf. The three men run into Claire Novak (guest star Kathryn Love Newton), also working the hunt. However, the reunion is short lived after Claire is bitten and the brothers race to find a way to help her before she turns. Amyn Kaderali directed the episode written by Meredith Glynn (#1216). Episode 16:
Convenience store. Or bar. Woman leaves it, on her phone. Texting. The guy she was texting comes up behind her. So busted. They walk alone on a snowy road. She says let's go back. Ever had a Moscow Mule? He wants her to act her age. They're brother and sister. She says 2 more years and I'm so gone. She hears a sound. He says it's just an animal. She's worried she's in a horror movie. Her brother says there's nothing there, I'll prove it. She turns back for the bar.
Brother hears her scream and runs back. She's lying on the road. He screams for help. Then he's attacked and heart ripped out by a guy in a mask. It focuses on her.
MOL. Sam and Dean waiting. Mick apologizes for being late. We've had our hands full since.... Sam asks about the Bat Signal. Mick says an animal attack. Girl is in the hospital and her brother got his heart ripped out. Mick did a lot of study on werewolves at the MOL school. Last night's attack wasn't on a full moon. We're looking for a pure blood. he wants to tag along. Sam says hunting isn't your thing. Mick says it should be. My team were thinkers, not fighters. I want to be ready for whatever's next.
Dean says he's dead weight. Sam argues. Dean says you go out there and get dead or get dead faster. If he's coming, you're babysitting him.
In the car. Monks like Martin Luther were some of the earliest hunters. Dean isn't impressed with the fancy crap, but Mick says the werewolves have been eradicated in Britain. Sam and Dean tell him about Garth controlling the urge. Nothing but beef hearts since. Mick directs them to a turn. Takes them to a 3-star hotel and separate rooms. Even a pool. Dean tells Sam to get the bags and steals mints inside.
Next day, Dean says I'm ruined. Even took a swim this morning. Naked. Sam read the lore books. Plasma therapy on wolves. Mick says it didn't work. Dean says he's slept better in the Impala. Not giving Mick the satisfaction. Sam shakes his head. LOL.
Visit the girl. Sam tells Mick to hang back. Talking to a grieving family is harder than you think. They ask to talk to the daughter and the mother says no. Mick comes in with a doctor coat. She's receptive to him and he gets all of them to step out a minute. Mother apologizes to them and Sam reassures her.
Mick starts chatting with the girl.
The mom doesn't know what her kids were doing out there. It's a nightmare. Hoping I'll wake up. I'm glad the FBI is here. Not the crazies, the Bigfoot truthers. Crazy. Some girl even came by, saying she's from Fish and Wildlife Service, barely as old as the daughter. Blonde, bad attitude. I have her card.
Mick finds the girl's been bitten. He exits the room. Sweet to the mom. She leaves. Sam and Dean ask if she was bit? Mick lies. Dean suspects their hunter here is Claire.
texting with Jody. Phone rings. hi, Dean. Talk with her at the hotel. Mick brought beers. Meets her. She reaches for a beer and Dean says no. Claire has been on this a day. The girl was at the local dive bar. Bartenders love me, it's a gift. Mick wants to call it a night. At 5:30. Claire calls him lame. Dean says it's Sam's best friend. Nerd soulmates. LOL. She says Jody and Alex are great, by the way. Let's go to the morgue. Sam suggests a hot meal. Dean hands her a menu. Go nuts. it's on Harry Potter. LOL.
Hospital. Mom steps out of the room. Mick sneaks in. He has a syringe. Says I'm sorry and starts to put it in the IV. She wolfs with the moon and attacks him. He injects her. She collapses, gasping. And seems to die. Mick has a scratch. He leaves the room. The mom returns and screams. Doctors and nurses run in while Mick is down the hall.
Morning. With the body. Autopsy is tomorrow. Doc says her wounds are gone. Phone rings and he leaves. Claire says what the hell. Mick lies. Sam says this is like......what if she turned? Explains the healing factor. Dean says Mick says she wasn't bit. Mick says I might've made a mistake. Claire stops them from bickering and focuses on the wolf that's still out there. Dean says Sam and Claire talk to the girl she was supposed to be crashing with and he and Mick would go to the bar.
Sam isn't not impressed with Claire's car junk. She tells him to stay put. They won't talk to some old skeezer. LOL.
Mick apologizes to Dean. Won't happen again. They enter the bar. Ask the bartender about the girl. Dean pushes. The bartender says she started coming in after Connor got hired. They're having a thing. Ask him. Confront Connor. You like high school girls, do you? He says he lets her in, that's all. He didn't see her leave that night. Then? Guess I went home. Dean says it's a simple question. Mick says I was writing my report. And then? Watched an episode of the Great British Bake-off and went to bed. See? Simple. Connor says he didn't do anything. Dean asks if he saw Claire. And threatens him if you ever touch her again, I'll break your face. They leave the bar. Dean says freshly-minted werewolf girls don't just die. what did you do? Mick admits. He injected her with silver nitrate. I had orders. Taunts Dean. Dean says things aren't just black and white out there. All you have is a case in front of you. Talks about the abused psychic. Mick says that's your luxury. We have a code. Dean says now Hayden's mom gets to bury 2 kids instead of one thanks to your code. Nice work.
Claire tells Sam he looks like a creeper. LOL. Tells him what she learned. Sam asks why Jody thinks you're in Madison looking at colleges. He didn't tell Jody, but why are you lying to her? Claire says Jody wants me to be normal. Did she say that? She doesn't have to. I'm better off on my own. Sam says if something happened to you.......you need to tell her the truth. Claire says screw you. Stop treating me like a stupid kid. Stop acting like one! She walks off.
And has her headphones on. Then looks around. The wolf is there. She's got a knife, but he's strong. And bites her.
She feels for the bite. Sam runs up. And sees her shoulder when he hugs her. They patch her up. Sam and Dean tells Mick we're done! She wants to know how long she's got. Dean tells her she can live with this. She's skeptical. Maybe some people can control this, but I can barely keep it together on a good day. If there's a chance I could hurt someone, I'd rather die. Sam reads about the cure. Mick says they were able to cure in rodents. The one human subject died in agony. Claire says maybe second time is a charm. Dean says no. Sam says it's her life. Dean turns on Mick. Mick says there are no great solutions here. She pleads with Dean. Alright. We do this. How to do we get it done? Mick says live blood from the wolf that bit her? Dean thinks it's the tattooed bartender. Dean and Sam will go. Mick stay. If anything happens to her-- You'll kill me. Smart guy.
Bar. Dean grabs the bartender. Sam tests him and he's human.
Mick preparing. Claire's in pain. The bite burns. She looks at it. It disappears. Mick takes the gun. She says it's happening! You don't understand how this feels! Mick says no. My instincts haven't been so grand of late. So. She curls up. He says we'll restrain you for my protection. Then sedate you. With any luck, when you wake up, this will all be over. She says Jody will be so mad at me. The wolf breaks in. It's the other bartender. He knocks Claire out and drags her off.
Sam and Dean return. Mick tells them about the wolf. I can find her. There's a tracker in her pocket. Find her, kill me later.
The wolf says you should've let me have Hayden. We had big plans. It hurts at first, but eventually it's like the best drug ever times a thousand. he says it's not like I want this. We didn't hurt anyone. Hunters showed up and took out 20 of us like that. Wolves need their pack. You'll see, I'm a nice guy. He forces heart into her mouth. She spits it on him. She says I have a family and they love me. Her eyes glow. Sam tackles the wolf. Dean goes to Claire. She's wolfy. Mick tries to get the blood. Wolf attacks Dean. Mick shoots the wolf. The syringe still in his back. Mick gets it and makes the cure. Claire is waking. She's out of control. Sam tries to appeal to her. Dean injects her when she goes at Sam.
She's convulsing. They're waiting. Dean steps out. Sam's starting to lose hope. Then she passes out. Dean? He comes back. The claws recede. She wakes. You guys look like crap.
Checking out of the hotel. Mick says that girl is a walking miracle. Dean says thanks. Mick says so we're good. Sam says no, but we'll give you a second chance. Dean says there won't be a third. Claire says she's craving a Milkbone right now. LOL. You guys are here and that's all that matters. Hasn't decided if she'll tell Jody. Dean says we have your back.
Claire calls and leaves a message. I've been hunting along and I know it's not what you want to hear. It's scary, but I have to do it a while. I'm ready. I couldn't have done it if you weren't my mom. Tell Alex to not touch my stuff. I'll see you guys. She gets in the car to drive and it's playing Wild Child by Joan Jett.
Next week - Assimilate or eliminate. Trouble with Mick.
