“Summer School: Chapter Eight”
SECOND CHANCES — With his world crashing down around him, Rick (Cameron Gellman) focuses his attention on protecting Solomon Grundy after learning hunters are after a bear in the woods. Meanwhile, Beth (Anjelika Washington) becomes the target of Eclipso’s (Nick Tarabay) latest plan. Brec Bassinger, Luke Wilson, Amy Smart, and Trae Romano also star. Andi Armaganian directed the episode written by Steve Harper (#208). Original airdate 9/28/2021.
Episode 8:
The forest. Lots of trees are bare. A car heads to a farm. White Chevy stops in front of the house. Woman gets out. Approaches the door and knocks. Rick answers. Ms. Woods? She says Happy 4th. Not that it feels like it. She wanted to apologize again for accusing him of cheating. She put together college brochures and financial aid information for him. College was a place she started over, beyond what people had said she was. Rick's uncle comes out and acts like a jerk. She leaves. Uncle tosses the brochures. You'll be in prison before you ever make it to college. Rick collects the papers after he goes back in the house.
Rick goes into the forest with a sack. Pauses at a fallen log and screams into the air. He's given everything and gotten nothing in return. He's so tired. So tired. Weeps. Struggles to catch his breath. Grundy appears.
Courtney feels guilty about Yolanda and wants to go apologize. Family says it's not her fault. Mike tells her to kick Eclipso's ass. Doorbell rings. it's a duffel holding the Wildcat suit.
Beth's house is a nice Victorian. She's trying to reach Dr. McNyder again. He talks through the goggles. What are you doing with my goggles? I found them. Are you a ghost? He says clinically speaking, I'm alive. She has his original goggles. He asks how old she is. She turned 16 in May. He says he needs to keep moving. Where are you? In the Shadow Land. And he's gone again. Something appeared on her laptop screen!
Grundy eating. It's a sack of apples this time. Rick talks about a dog. Pitbull named Jax. His uncle wanted a fight dog. Made him worse. So one day, I told him Jax ran away. But I took him to Oakville for a new home. When I went back to visits a year later, he was a different dog because people cared about him. They loved him. Maybe you just need someone to be a little kind. Grundy really devouring those apples. Rick doesn't think Grundy understands what he's talking about. Then Grundy pats his back and offers an apple. Rick grins and bites into it. Grundy belches again.
Courtney puts the suit in a trunk in the basement. Checks on the staff. I wish I knew how to help you, too. Because you're my friend. I'm sorry I haven't said that before. Staff glows a bit.
Beth's house. Her parents enter. You're never here this time of day. Mom says we should talk about the divorce. You made lunch? Reuben sandwiches. Should we talk? Dad says they fell in love at first sight. But when you were born, we made the decision to focus on you. Raising you, trying to work....we lost sight of each other. Eventually we grew apart. Because of you, Beth. What? There's bugs in Beth's sandwich! She tosses it. Runs away.
Rick in the woods. Heading back to the Mustang. Radio tells people there's been a bear sighting, this time closer to town. Rick sees trucks arrive. The Blue Valley Hunters Association is going to get the bear. Rick gets back out of the car.
Pat working on STRIPE. Courtney says we need to do something about Cosmo. The staff. We can't sit around and hope. He says he's working hard to get STRIPE online. And the staff was designed to fix itself. You gotta be patient. She feels useless! He knows how she feels. She wonders where Eclipso is. What he's waiting for. Pat's phone buzzes. Hey, Rick. Pat, Grundy needs our help.
**Another secret for the whole team to learn. Heh.
Pat and Courtney arrive. Call Rick's phone and voicemail. Courtney thinks the staff only has a couple shots in it. Rick's been feeding Grundy for weeks? Why? I can't believe he's kept a secret like this. Pat says he's gotta have a reason.
Beth comes to Courtney's and no one's there. Lights all off. Anybody? The little boy Eclipso is there. Who are you? I'm Bruce. What are you doing here, Bruce? He says where else should I be? She says this isn't your house. He calls her a liar and a thief. I know your kind. You stole these goggles. Stealing, that's what you people do. She tells him to shut up. He runs upstairs. She cautiously follows. Whispers in the dark. Checks a room. Courtney's room. Bruce is giggling. Beth says I know you're in the closet. Come out of there! She goes to it. Opens the door. He says you're not very smart, are you? From behind her. You don't deserve these. She says you're Eclipso. He says The staff chose Courtney. Courtney chose Yolanda. Rick's dad chose him. No one chose you. Fighters are athletic. But you're weak. I guess some of the stereotypes are wrong. She calls him a racist and he magically pushes her in the closet.
Rick runs into two hunters. They say a 10 year old girl is missing. We need to find whatever's out here and kill it. Rick says No! He wouldn't hurt her. I'll find her and bring her back safe. He runs off to find Grundy. Hunter yells that it's not safe out here. Not safe for anyone!
**Are racist taunts really where Eclipso thought it'd be easiest to mess with Beth? We haven't seen anyone be racist in the town at all. Beth's only been picked on for being a nerd and nerds of all colors run into bullies.
She beats on the closet door. Then she's dropped......into the JSA. What are you doing here? How'd you get in here, kid? Are you lost? You don't belong here. Bruce says she's the wrong age. Wrong gender. Wrong color. Giggles and takes off. She chases after him.
Rick looking for Grundy.
Pat and Courtney looking for Rick.
Rick put on the Hourman pendant.
Pat and Courtney hear Rick calling Grundy's name.
Rick finally finds Grundy and he's bloody. Rick asks are you okay? There's a body in the water. Little girl. Did you kill her? DID YOU KILL HER? Rick calls him a DAMN MONSTER. Grundy flees. Rick goes after him. I'm going to kill you! Grundy! Courtney and Pat arrive where they'd been. Pat approaches the body. Sets the little girl on the shore. She opens her eyes, then disappears. Giggling in the air. Eclipso.
**They said there would be more horror elements to this season. Yup.
Night at the farm. Rick finds Grundy. Why'd you do it?! Why'd you kill that little girl?! He attacks and beats on Grundy.
Fireworks show starts.
Beth running and she's back in the house. Fire in the fireplace. Bruce laughing at her. I know everything about you, Beth. That's what scares you the most. You've been hiding behind that stupid smile your entire life. Behind those glasses, you're just a scared little girl. She says if I'm so scared, why are you hiding? What are you afraid of? Eclipso appears behind her. NOTHING.
Rick beating on Grundy. Courtney and Pat arrive, yelling at him to stop.
Eclipso calls Beth the weakest of them. Born from nothing. Destined to be nothing. She says no! He grabs her.
Courtney and Pat plead with Rick. That's not Grundy! Courtney blasts him. Rick looks up from the ground and it's his uncle who landed by the truck. Unconscious. Pat checks him. Rick rips the hourglass off and smashes it on the ground. Courtney's horrified. The stuff that powered it floats away.
Eclipso tells Beth to admit her fear, her envy. Her anger. You forced yourself into the group like you've done all your life. They don't want you. No one does. They didn't choose you. Beth says that's what you want from me? I am strong, proud. I chose myself. Me! I'm Dr. Mid-nite. Oh yeah, and I love being black. She then has the goggles on and Eclipso is gone.
Police at Rick's house. Did Rick call them on himself? Ambulance takes the uncle away. Then police take Rick. Courtney and Pat stand there while fireworks still go off.
Camera moves to the silos and Grundy peeks out. Friend... Awww.
Beth is in her house. She never left. Dr. McNyder tells her to not take off the goggles. You can see through Eclipso's visions. She saved herself. Says I'm the new Doctor Mid-Nite. He stops talking to her again. Her mother is calling for her. She looks for her mom. Her parents find her and they're real this time. Beth apologizes about earlier. They say they weren't here all day. We've been at work, Beth. Honey, are you alright? I don't know. Sometimes I think I'm trying to be something I don't know I can be. Because of what somebody said? Well.....yeah. Her mom says when they moved to Blue Valley, they hadn't had a black doctor here. She replaced a doctor who worked there over 50 years. They loved him with good reason. They didn't trust I could do the job. She healed people, saved lives, delivered a lot of kids. And eventually, I won Blue Valley over. Beth, you can be anything you want to be because you're our daughter. You'll work hard because that's what this family does. Don't let anyone tell you what you can't be. What are you wearing? Beth says these are for swimming. I'm going to join the swim team.
Mike and Barbara discuss Rick. His uncle is in critical condition. Pat and Courtney went to the police station. Mike hugs her, calling her Mom. Thanks, Mike. The window frosts over outside!
Next ep - Storm. Eclipso getting stronger. Pat attacked. Everyone in this house is going to die.
