"I Went to the Woods"
STEFAN FINDS HIMSELF IN THE FIGHT OF HIS LIFE IN THIS EPISODE DIRECTED BY JULIE PLEC — In the aftermath of his brother’s fateful decision, Stefan (Paul Wesley) awakens to find himself thrown into a life or death situation with only his basic instincts to rely on. With time working against him, he sets off on a journey of survival while forced to confront a lifetime of irreversible damage Damon (Ian Somerhalder) has done to their relationship. Meanwhile, desperate to save his brother, Damon follows an unusual lead he has come across, while Matt (Zach Roerig) sends Valerie (guest star Elizabeth Blackmore) to Dallas to enlist Alaric’s (Matt Davis) help in the search for Stefan. Finally, when Rayna (guest star Leslie-Anne Huff) discovers the emergence of a new threat, she sets off on her own mission to find Stefan before the others do. Episode 17:
Body on a road. Stefan. He sits up. Cut on his forehead. Car accident. Someone screaming in a burning bus. He runs to it. People yelling and screaming. he gets the door open and helps a girl out, then goes back for more. Brings a guy out. Sirens coming.
Stefan's given oxygen. EMT asks his name. He doesn't remember. He has a gash to an artery. He sees a body wheeled by and is confused. She calls him a hero for saving the cheerleaders. He says my name is Stefan Salvatore. I'm in Hell.
Texas. The airfield. It's dark and Damon's still sitting with Stefan's body. Valerie there, too. They didn't know. Damon asks what? That Rayna stabbed Stefan. Probably thought they did the world a favor. Damon says if you're done mourning, we need to leave. She blames him. Says the Stone is destroyed. Stefan is lost. Damon says if Stefan is dead, then I'm doing penance and self-loathing for eternity and I'm not doing that, so HE's not DEAD! Asks her to locate Rayna. She's going to do that without him. And disappears.
Stefan doesn't get it. What's the lesson here? This is all a looping nightmare for my psyche. EMT tells him to sit. Officer brings over a wallet. Have you been drinking, sir? Walk in a straight line.
Rayna calls Matt. I need help. Matt says I did my part, I'm out. Rayna says he's free! They're all free. Matt asks what do you mean, free? Valerie grabs Rayna. Answer that.
Damon calls Valerie. Finds Stefan's body walking on the road.
Stefan's being called Marty. Officer says you were driving the bus. What?
All the souls in the Stone are wandering the earth. Rayna can feel them everywhere. She burned all the original bodies of those vampires, so....
Why do you keep calling me Marty?
Rayna says the vampire souls are in the first dead bodies they could find! Valerie asks where did Stefan end up? Where did Stefan go? Rayna doesn't know.
Damon talks to Stefan's body. The person inside doesn't know him.
Stefan is arrested for driving under the influence. He sees his reflection in a side mirror and it's not his face. He's in Marty's body.
Stefan's struggling. He runs into the woods. Trips and falls. Gets up and keeps going.
Accident on the news. Matt calls Alaric. Calling to warn you. I made sure Caroline was safe. Ric says we were OUT. 3 years! We get married in a month. Matt says Caroline was bait, that's all. Ric asks what the hell happened to you, man? Matt says I'm 3 states away and this affects everybody. Doorbell. Valerie arrives with Rayna. Tells Ric what happened. Stefan's missing. Ric asks what do we need to do? Rayna says hunt them all down. That Stone was made for the worst of the worst. The most evil vampires of the last 200 years.
Damon gives Stefan the journal, see if it jogs your memory. You're not in Hell anymore. This is real. The vampire says Damon, I'm famished.
Daylight. Stefan pukes. Sees a cabin in the woods. He's been running handcuffed all night. Tries to get in. Pries wood off a window, and breaks it. falls inside. Looks through kitchen drawers. There's a shed outside. A workshop. He finds a vice and works to break the cuffs. Gets one hand free.
The vampire feeds on a waitress. Damon says that's enough. Vampire offers her to Damon. He gets up to make a call. And turn on the jukebox. Calls Ric. How long did it take you to figure out that wasn't Jo? That's not Stefan. We don't know who that is! Where's Stefan? We're working on it. Damon doesn't want to spend long babysitting a brother knockoff. Ric says if Stefan's in a human body, he's got about 3 days to live.
**Way to start a conversation, Damon. LOL.
Stefan looks in a mirror again. Tapes his broken thumb and wrist. No food, no phone, no running water. There's an old truck outside. And a generator. He gets a generator running. TV static. He gets a channel. Manhunt for Marty Hammond. A known drunk with a medical history. A former Marine.
Rayna says turn the TV down. Valerie asks about the voices. Do you see them, like visions? Rayna says pieces. Valerie asks for a picture of Stefan. Help Rayna focus on the noise. Ric brought a photo of Caroline's. Valerie channels through Rayna to see him. An anchor tattoo on his hand. Ric rewinds the TV. Marty Hammond is our guy.
Calls Damon. Arkansas. How soon can you get there? Damon says depends on how cooperative my passenger is. Vampire says this place is dead.
Stefan tries to get the truck running. Of course I'm trapped in the body of a damn addict. Being a human sucks. Everything hurts all the damn time. He gets the truck running. Suck on that, Marty, you miserable drunk!
Vampire tells Damon he loves him. Damon says I know you're not Stefan. The vampire says your brother truly, truly hates you. Reads from the journal. I don't plan on giving up his body. Damon says that hair requires a tremendous amount of maintenance. LOL. Vampire wants to know how far is Memphis. Damon says please tell me your name is Elvis. LOL. Vampire says Damon is entertaining. When this is over, we should go carousing together. Then escapes out the car window. Damon stops the car, but the vampire is already gone.
Damon calls Ric. Tells him. You have a Heretic and a Huntress. Use them. Rayna says Memphis? We have to get him. He should be staked and burned and sent to oblivion. Rayna breaks free. Breaks Valerie's neck. Ric lets her leave.
Stefan's out of gas. He stops near a woman in a car. Do you know where we are? I'm lost and out of gas. Can I borrow your phone? Radio talks about the dangerous man. She closes the door after elbowing him down. Drives away. It starts snowing. Poor Stefan.
Damon gets to a high school. Compels an officer to believe he's Matt Donovan. LOL. Marty's alone in the woods. No one can survive these temps overnight.
Stefan in the car, freezing. Sees Damon. Let's get you back in your old body. What's wrong? Stefan says this, you.....if you're here, I'm saved and I owe you one. But if you're a hallucination, then I've entered the delirium phase of withdrawal and I'm officially, royally screwed. Damon's gone. Stefan pukes outside the truck.
12 degrees and dropping. Damon sees a woman brought into the shelter. Wants to question her. Tell me exactly where you saw him. She tells him specifically. Damon tells them he's south of Oden. Send all troops there. She says let me know if they find my phone.
Phone rings. Stefan crawls to it. Hello? Damon. Damon's driving to him. Damon tells him you have to move. Stefan says I can't feel my legs. Damon says just get up! This is not how you're going to die, Stefan Salvatore. Stefan says it seems kinda fitting to me. Damon says come on.... Stefan says you suck at playing hero. Shall I list all the ways this is your fault? Damon says sure. Stefan says you bailed on me. You went into a coffin instead of facing your mistakes. When I came to? I need to save those people on the bos! It was my instinct! What does the voice in your head SAY? Damon says fine, I'm selfish, angry, impatient, and until I met Elena, I wasn't interested in doing the right thing for anybody. My brother included. You mad? Resent me? Good. Then get up and come kick my ass yourself.
Stefan gets up and tries to walk. I'm walking. You wanna know why this is so hard? Because eventually I'm not going to be able to go on and when that happens, I don't believe you'll be there.
Alaric and Valerie in a 24 hour diner. Discuss Stefan and Caroline. She never fooled herself into thinking it would last. But you put a ring on it. Ric knows Stefan might ruin my perfect little life. So what? She's rooting for Ric and Caroline. He says how selfless of you. LOL.
Damon and Stefan on the phone. What's the worst of being human? Stefan says the inability to compel people. Damon says yeah, sucks having to play the rules. Stefan asks if he remembers playing hide and seek? Damon says you cheated. You hid in Father's office. Damon was scared to break the rules. Scared for Stefan to get caught. Why do you bring it up? Stefan says because you'll never find me. He collapses on the snow. Lights shine on him. It's Damon's car. He picks Stefan up.
Stefan wakes in the car. Damon, what's wrong? Nothing. Damon has donuts. Stefan binges on them. I miss the ecstasy of eating this crappy donut. Damon asks if all's forgiven? Stefan says not by a long shot. He's bleeding. Damon says we have less than 48 hours to find your body.
Valerie says he's stopped in a frat house in Memphis. Alaric says we have to go. A string of murders in the 1880s. A serial killer that stalked college kids. He'd force his victims to murder each other. No one would believe them. They never caught the killer.
Vampire locks them in the party and revels in the crowd.
