“The Memory Remains”
SECRETS AND LIES – Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) investigate a missing person’s case in a small town. The lead witness tells the Winchesters the attacker was a man with the head of a goat. Sam and Dean aren’t sure what to believe but when the witness goes missing they realize the town is hiding a dark secret. Phil Sgriccia directed the episode written by John Bring (#1218). Episode 18:
Tomahawk, Wisconsin. Campfire and beers. Couples making out. One young guy wants to leave. Another encourages him to stay and enjoy the show. You know you're a freak, right? Oh, yeah. The first kid leaves. Something's watching him in the woods. rustle of leaves. Backpack of cash. He's caught in a trap against a tree. He yells for help, but they can't hear him over the music. One finally does and comes walking. But the creature hits the kid on the head. The second one sees and runs.
Dean trying to call Cas again. Leaves another message. Sam at the table. Let's find him. Dean's been trying. no luck. Sam says this isn't the first time Cas has fallen off the map. He stayed up all night going through every book on demons. Princes of Hell are good at staying off the radar. He gets an email from Mick about a case in Wisconsin. 1 year went missing, then a 20 year gap, until now.
Catch sent it.
Tomahawk. Sheriff asks why the feds are interested here? He's doing taxidermy in the office. He thinks the kid bailed. Mom left years ago and the dad, well.....Jared fell down the stairs a lot if you know what I mean. The dad breathes through a tube now. Jared was his caretaker. He wouldn't blame him for leaving town. Dean asks where they can find the friends. Oh, yeah, sure.
They find the kid. Dean lets him smoke his joint. Sheriff says you were with Jared. He says I know Jared didn't leave town. He has history with the sheriff. He brings me in for questioning every time something happens in this town. Dean asks why don't you tell us what happened? He says the monster got him. Black Bill.
Diner. Dean flirts with the waitress. Sam says dude, focus. Black Bill lives in the forest and has the head of a goat. Dean still has eyes on the waitress. Figure out what it is and I'll figure out how to kill it. Don't wait up. The Colt dusts everything. He goes to the counter to chat her up.
Darren is startled by Pete at work. you clocked in late again. I know you and Jared were close. I liked him, too. Darren says after you put him on part time, he pretty much hated you. Pete says you can't keep using him as an excuse. And lay off the reefer, at least tomorrow. It's a big day.
Darren leaves work. It's snowing outside. Gets in his truck and Black Bill breaks the window and pulls him out and hits him with a mallet.
Sam on the phone. Dean and the waitress in the morning. Good night? Awesome. So awesome. You gonna eat that? Guess not. Would it kill you to order pancakes once? LOL. Sam's night was busy with research. Satyr. Dean's not impressed. Satyr's are creatures of uncontrollable lust. When the orgy was over, the satyr would feed on the victims until his belly was full of their moist, slippery meat. Darren never made it home last night.
They go to the plant. Darren didn't show up for work today. Pete says he last saw him last night. Health inspector is trying to shut us down. Equipment is out of date. Our owner would rather play sheriff than take care of the plant. His family has owned this plant forever. He's hoping to sweet talk the inspector. Pete thinks it's hopeless. Dean is hungry. LOL. Find the sheriff. He says it's the first he's heard of Darren missing. They ask about Black Bill. Sheriff says around here that's the boogeyman story. They cite the missing people story. Sheriff doesn't think anything of it. He thinks Darren is holed up somewhere sleeping it off. Waking up now safe and sound.
Darren wakes in a cold room. Beats on the door. It's in the plant! And Dean and Sam leave, not hearing it. Darren finds Jared frozen to death. Black Bill enters. Darren beats on the door screaming for help. Black Bill rips into him.
Dean eating at the diner. Sam says seriously? How can you eat? Dean says grow up, Sam. This is heaven. Dean checked the missing names with the plant roster. All of them have worked there. Sam was at Hall of Records. Bishops founded the town. They owned everything until a few years ago. Sheriff sold off everything but the plant and family estate. Sam gets a text from Mick.
Catch says it's clear. Onward. Into the MOL HQ. It's a research mission. Hess wants to know everything about them. And leave no trace. Oh, and find the bloody Colt.
Family mansion. Let's check inside. Covered furniture. Lights off. Empty. Sam opens a door. Dean, I say we just got lucky. Locked room. To the cellar. Hello? Goat dude? They go downstairs. Bulb explodes when they try the light. Why is it always the rich ones? A door opens upstairs.
Sheriff grabs keys from a book. Finds the basement open and pulls his gun. Dean pulls the Colt on him. Hiya, Sheriff.
Dean takes the sheriff's gun. Talk. He says it's not what it looks like. Sam asks what's going on? Sheriff says you won't believe me. Try us. My family, we got a secret. About Black Bill? No. Yeah, but he's not real. He's us. Growing up, my father would tell stories about a monster that lived under our house and made us rich. All we had to do is feed it human blood. They'd grab some poor SOB and bring him here. They wore a mask. Black Bill, they made him up. The monster is the God of Sacrifice. They bound Moloch. Starved him. He'd get so hungry he'd do anything for blood. Moloch made us rich. After my father died, I put an end to it. I wanted to leave a legacy. What happened to Moloch? I kept him locked up. Hoped he'd starve to death. Locked up where? Below the basement. Sam checks the grate. It's empty. What? It's empty. There's a noise upstairs. Dean says stay and keep an eye on him.
Upstairs. 2nd floor. Black Bill is there. Dean approaches. Then someone attacks him. He falls over the stairs. Sam is locked in the basement. Dean is unconscious.
Sam trying to break out. Sheriff grabs a cleaver for it. They get out. Sam's tracking Dean's cell.
MOL HQ. Catch can't see a damn thing through the telescope. Looks in a bedroom. Dean's busty asian beauties mags. The others photograph everything. Catch finds a photo of Mary and baby Dean.
Dean's bloody behind the ear. Wakes. Tied up. Hiya, Pete. Nice digs. Pete was looking for his brother. Different moms, same daddy. Old Man Bishop had an eye for the ladies. Barry grew up in the big house, I grew up in a double-wide. That sound fair to you? Dean says it sounds like a bad episode of Dynasty. Pete has a god. He went to the house for anything he could sell and found something else. Moloch told me he'd make me rich, solves all my problems. All I'd have to do is feed him. Hunting people, killing them. The family business. LOL. I'm saving this town. Dean says tell that to Darren and Jared. Pete says loose ends, you know? Barry was supposed to be the next meal, but you'll do. He puts Dean in the cooler. Thanks for helping out.
Brits done. No Colt. Winchesters must have it. Catch leaves a mike inside. Now, then, I could use a pint. They leave the bunker.
Dean sees it drag away another body. Breaks free. Bangs on the door.
Sam and Barry in the plant.

Sam hears something toward the cooler.
Moloch keeps evading Dean.
Pete attacks Sam. Barry tackles him. You have to stop! Pete says don't act like you care. I get all the crap!
Moloch behind Dean.
Pete gets free. I'm saving this town. I'm the hero, and you're dead. Sam shoots him.
Dean and Moloch. Sam gets in the cooler and shoots Moloch with the Colt. It dies. Colt. Dusts anything. Dean nods from the floor and lays down.
Cold meat on Dean's face. Feels like I went 12 rounds with a god, so, normal. Barry says you should go. Sam says we can help clean up. No. It's on me. This is my legacy.
Home. Hey, next time you hear me say our family is messed up, remind me we could be goat people. Fair enough. Dean wonders what our legacy will be, after we're gone. You know, 100 years ago. Sam doesn't think they'll be remembered. But the people we saved, they're our legacy. They'll fade away too. But that's fine, because we left the world better than we found it. Dean wonders what happens to this place after we're gone. think some hunter will find it and move in? Sam says I hope so. Dean carves the table. DW. Passes it to Sam. Sam carves next to his. Just like they did in the Impala as boys. Dean says we gotta call Mick, debrief or whatever. Sam calls. Catch answers. Says Mick flew back to London. He had a lot to answer for. For the time being, you'll report to me. He'd rather be with your mother, hunting, for chupucabra in Texas. Dean says we fought a god and won. Excellent. Catch says we'll be in touch.
He kept the photo! Hears Dean ragging on him through the bug.
