“Hope Is Not The Goal”
FOLLOWING THE TRAIL — When two local students go missing, Alaric (Matthew Davis) sends Hope (Danielle Rose Russell), Lizzie (Jenny Boyd), MG (Quincy Fouse), and Landon (Aria Shahghasemi) to Mystic Falls High to investigate. Meanwhile, as Josie (Kaylee Bryant) helps Rafael (Peyton Alex Smith) adjust to his new life at the school, his reluctance to follow the wolf pack’s rules puts a target on his back. Lastly, an unsettling discovery puts Alaric and Sheriff Donovan (guest star Zach Roerig) at odds with one another. Chris Grismer directed the episode with story by Brett Mathews and teleplay by Bryce Ahart & Stephanie McFarlane (#104). Original airdate 11/15/2018.
Episode 4:
Running through the woods. Something roars at MG. I'm a lovable virgin, it's not my time. It's Grodd! He had a nightmare after reading a Flash comic. Then the Scream Ghost Face attacks him. He wakes for real.
Kitchen. MG opens the fridge and takes a blood bag. The other vampire is there. He went out for a midnight snack. We good? MG says yep. The other one leaves. MG notices a bloody towel.
Day at the school. Nice pool in the backyard. Two local girls didn't come home last night. Sheriff Donovan updating the kids. The Ric asks for volunteers to go to Mystic Falls High as exchange students. First one is his daughter. Because that's what heroes do. The vampires next. Then Hope.
Hope and Ric sparing with kali sticks. She asks about Landon. Ric says there's a lot we need to learn about him. She asks what to do about him while they search for the missing mean girls?
Landon and Raf. Ric says Landon, you might be of use today.
Mystic Falls High. They arrive. He runs into Lizzie. Lizzie starts giving orders. Asks MG to be Robin to her Batwoman. Oy.
Raf in the mess hall. Doesn't know where to sit. Then picks a chair next to Josie. She says the wolves usually eat outside. He'd rather hang with her. She didn't see him at the assembly. She's working on offensive spells for class. Raf is still wrapping his head around magic being normal. He'll be happy when Landon gets to stay. Alpha wolf gets Raf for a chat. You're done when I say you're done. Raf walks Josie to class.
Mystic Falls. Landon and Hope. He's giving the tour. She says we're not friends. He apologizes. He's really nervous. There's no way Dana's group will talk to you. Except the cheerleaders ask Hope to lunch. Heh.
Matt and Ric find Dana's car. Upside down and blood streaked. They follow tracks. To a body. Matt says you said the creatures follow the knife. Ric says I did. this doesn't make sense. Matt says it makes perfect sense. A vampire bite.
MG in the PE gym. With Lizzie. He tries to compel a girl and it doesn't work. Lizzie asks what's with the compulsion fail? He says you're distracting me. Ric calls. I need to talk to everyone. Lizzie, I told you to stay together. He asks them to keep their cool. 1, Dana is dead. 2, A vampire killed her. 3, I told the sheriff we had nothing to do with it, so I better be right. They say they don't know anything. Lizzie tells MG to spill after Ric hangs up.
Hope with Landon again. She got dirt from Sheryl. Landon says Connor is not a killer. Hope says you want to play good cop or bad cop. He points out the girl with a scarf.
Matt pushing Ric about the vampires. And Dana's body is now gone.
Caleb tries to feed on a blond again. He compels her to leave when Lizzie and MG catch him. Lizzie stops Caleb from leaving. He says all I did was feed. I didn't kill Dana. Landon says he's right. Dana wanders out of the woods to the parking lot.
Dana tells them what happened to her. She finds her vampire bite. Lizzie says it's the mother of all hickies. Heh. Hope puts Dana to sleep when she wants to run to the cops. Kids argue what to do about the transitioning vampire.
Raf confronted by the pack. They want to initiate him. Tell us the story of how you triggered your curse. Submit or bleed and then submit. Your call. Raf gets tossed. Then they beat on him. And kick him. Josie intercedes. Alpha kicks Raf in the head before he leaves. He's wolfie when Josie goes to him. Stay away from me.
Dana into the bus. Landon got the update on how vampires transition. They argue over what to tell Dana. Landon says tell her the truth so she has a choice. Lizzie says she's not joining drill team. Hope wakes her. Dana doesn't feel well. Hope says it's okay, you're just hungry. Dana hurls black stuff on the floor. She's literally puking her guts out.
Dana's body is a husk now. Hope says this is not a vampire. Got to be another monster from the knife. Caleb says maybe the monster has been in front of us all along. Landon. Landon says to Hope you believe me, right? Okay. Say no more. He walks away.
Raf is breaking stuff outside. Josie tells him to calm down. Close his eyes and breathe. Breathe. Good. He asks if that was magic? She says no, years of practice with Lizzie. He didn't mean to scare her. She says what scares me is if you're dead if you don't submit. He's an alpha and you're a wolf. This is how it is. They spot webbing upstairs. Investigate. Josie? There's something wrapped up. It's Sasha. Her eyes open. Josie backs up and she's stuck in the web. And now he is, too.
Landon in the bathroom. Connor. Stares at him. Landon leaves. Connor follows. What? Let's get this over with. What's it gonna be? Say something, you dick. Connor just stares at him. Landon hits him and skin peels off! It's an insect!
MG cleans his shoes. Lizzie hosed the asphalt. Caleb says Landon could be in there eating fools. Hope says if it's not Landon, what else could it be. MG says a spider! A big one. The writer bases her stories on Greek Lore. The spider wears human skin to pass. Landon comes back with the skin piece.
Josie and Raf. This is bad. It's going to come back and eat us. She tells him we don't have powers of our own. We have to siphon power from others first. He asks if she can siphon from a wolf. She kisses him. Apologizes. He says don't be. Connor spider arrives. Damn. It sheds some skin and starts climbing. Josie lights it on fire. And it's not dead.
Kids running in the woods. Phone rings. Hi, Daddy. He's checking in. Define good, Lizzie. I tracked Dana's body to the glove compartment! She says it's okay, Daddy, we've got it. He tells her to do nothing, and where is Hope? She says you're going to have to trust me for once and hangs up.
Landon and Hope arrive to battle the spider. Josie kisses Raf again to free them. Hope holds hands with Lizzie and Josie and chants at the spider. They blow it up.
Raf lays the webbed girl on the ground. The witches come out covered in goo.
The girl wasn't bitten. So MG compels her with a story. Dana's dead? Lizzie says take it all away. Hope says tell her it'll hurt, it always will, but she'll remember the good times with Dana, too. Hold on to those because it's the key to getting through this.
Gym. Raf and Josie watching a game. Raf didn't think he needed anyone but Landon, but this place, keeping Landon here isn't worth it. Josie says we look out for each other. It's worth it. Ball rolls to them. Raf picks it up. He tells the story to the alpha. Am I part of the pack now? Alpha says take a knee. Submit and take a knee. No, I'm just playing. It's your ball. You're in the next round.
Hope and Landon at the water. So much for my plan to spend the day as a normal teenage girl. You did good back there. Landon says yeah. Until you all accused me of being a monster. She says it'll take time to trust you again. He says he doesn't know why he was drawn to the knife or have an explanation for any of this. We're in this together. All I wanted to do was spend time with you, but all day long you ridiculed me and hung me out to dry when it mattered. You wanted to be normal? Congrats, Hope. You're officially normal. He walks away.
Ric chews Lizzie out for not obeying him. She says she tried to be a hero because you treat Hope like one. He says Hope is the cautionary tale. Josie says you can't protect us from everything. We have to start learning to protect ourselves. Ric says this is that moment when parent lose all control. Dad.... He'll take it into consideration. I love you. Sort of. He leaves. Lizzie asks Josie where that came from?
Caleb yells at MG about vamps before tramps. MG says no, don't disrespect her like that. Caleb calls him a puppet. No I'm not. Caleb makes a list. Caleb says the blood bags aren't human blood! Ask yourself why you don't see rabbits running around the yard.
Matt asks Caleb about the cheerleaders wearing scarves around their necks. Ric had his suspicions and Caleb confirms it. Caleb bares fangs at Matt. Ric darts him. They trade barbs.
Ric locks Caleb in the basement. Calls his aide to come home. Nothing's coming your way. Except there's a monster at the door!
