“The Gamblers”
YOU GOT TO KNOW WHEN TO FOLD ‘EM – Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) press their luck in a winner-takes-all game of pool. Meanwhile, Castiel (Misha Collins) hunts down a would-be murderer, but not for reasons one might think. Episode 11:
Pool table. Man in a suit is watching Joey clear the table. 8 ball goes in. The guy in the suit and glasses freaks out. Tries to hit his opponent. He's tossed out. You know the rules. You're out of luck. Leonard holds the coin, and flips it. Then he's run over in the road by a semi.
Bunker. Cas enters. Sam? Dean? Note on the table. Alaska?
Impala. Sam texting with someone. Dean says silent mode is always an option. How is Eileen doing? Sam says she thinks our plan sounds too good to be true. Maybe she's right. luck? Can that really fix our whole problem? Dean doesn't know how much normal he can take. Sam says this place isn't in the lore. No one but Garth has heard of it. Dean believes. Chuck wants us weak. he's coming for us. If we haven't figured this out, we're DOA.
Phone ringing in a bedroom. Cas answers it. Sheriff looking for Agent Watts. He's working a case in Alaska. This is Agent Lizzo. Agent Watts started a file last spring. Call with info regarding a Jack Kline. Name ring a bell? Yeah.
Impala stops in daylight. Last call on food for a few hundred miles. Dean ate all the sandwiches. What can we get for $4.60? Slice a pie and a cup of coffee. Dean hoped for a cheeseburger. Dude, Lactaid. Dean asks the waitress what's up that road? She says it sounds nuts. There's an urban legend about a pool hall that is magic....I told you. If you get up there and win, you come back lucky. Except no one ever does. Leonard went up to find the place and never came back. Had some sort of accident. Phone rings in the diner. Dean says it could be awesome. It's pool! Sam says we had to hustle pool to eat. The waitress tells them it looks like The Impala has a flat.
Cas got a video from the sheriff, who's on the phone. Office security camera. Local doctor. Jack grabbed the man and the signal goes out for 2 and a half minutes. Killed the doc in his office. Why? Is that his heart? Jack eats it.
**Billie, why did you send Jack to Earth to eat hearts?
The boys arrive at the pool hall. Sam says we don't even have beer money. Dean asks for 2 waters. Evie the bartender. He asks about a game. Pax, two more for ya. Sam asks about Leonard. She says she doesn't know. Pax asks how'd you find us? A friend. Pax shows them a coin. What are we looking at? Pax says touch it. Dean does and it glows green. Pax says not great, not the worst, either. Everyone walks in with a certain amount of luck. You, about average. If you set it on the table and you win, your fortune might improve. But if the coin goes blank, you're out of luck and you have to leave. Sam asks what is this place? Who owns it? Pax says he just works here. Dean asks when I win, can I split the luck? Sam pulls him aside. Dean is confident he can win. I wipe the floor with you when it comes to pool. Sam can't argue. Dean tells Pax he's in.
Cas at the scene. Searching the office. Finds a case. With a sword. Grigori!
Jack following another Grigori.
Dean waiting for a game. Tries to get someone to take interest. A woman walks over. Puts her coin in. Rack em up. Sam sits at the bar. Dean places his coin. Sam asks about the woman. Moira. Her sister is in a coma. Evie says everybody wants something. He asks about weird smells, like rotten eggs. Bundles laying around. She says I guess it is pretty unbelievable. Most people think this place is a Godsend. People come and play. They go on a streak. Should've walked away. But they're not winning anymore.
Dean sinks an 8 ball. His coin glows. Moira swears.
Jack hunting the Grigori. Got an angel blade. It grabs him. Why are you following me?
Sam warns Dean about this place. Dean says we have to minimize our risk and maximize our profit. Sam says one more game. Dean plays against Joey Six. PBR circuit. Dean misses sinking the 8 ball. Joey's turn. Blocks Dean's shot. Joey says double or nothing you miss that shot. Dean skips the white ball over and sinks the 8 ball. Hell of a shot. Dean's coin glows. Joey takes his coin outside.
Sam follows. And Dean. Joey's upset. Can't hustle a hustler. Joey starts coughing badly. Bleeding. Let an old man go die in peace. Cancer. Came out here to beat it. Won an extra year. Saved his last cig for this moment.
**Luck just gets transferred between all the coins, back an forth until one is blank and they die.
Boys come back into the bar. Dean wants to hit the road. Sam says he needs to figure this out. Dean wants to go on a quick drive. If Baby treats me right, we're out of the woods.
Cas meets with the sheriff. Transient saw Jack in an altercation. Cas asks about abandoned buildings. A church. 2 blocks down on your right. Sheriff says I called you for answers. Cas says I intend to find them.
Sam trying to convince people to stop playing. Evie says none of us are going anywhere. Sam asks if she's trapped here. Dean says the car won't even run. Sam figures out the coins....what if someone is skimming luck every game. Atrox Fortuna. The Roman goddess of luck. Evie can't help. She's alive because she's allowed to stay, as long as she keeps working. Pax is the goddess' son.
Jack captured. The Grigori says I know what you are. Fight back. As a soldier, I respect your silence. When I ask why are you killing my kind, you should answer so I don't hurt you. Why did you kill them? Grigori have their own frequency of angel radio. Did you want him to call to me to draw me out? Kill me, too?
Dean and Sam take Pax. Where's your mom? Calls Fortuna out. It's Moira. We know you're skimming the luck. We want it back or we kill him. Moira doesn't care. Dean releases Pax. Play me for it. Moira says you're just a beach read. He says lady, I'm Tolstoy. She laughs. She wants to play Sam. He agrees. But not for our luck. I'll play for the lives of everyone in here. She says no, only your luck, and if you lose, I get your lives. You threatened my livelihood and my baby. An example must be made. Are you in?
Grogoria cuts Jack's throat. Jack says you can't kill me. Grogori can make him suffer. You killed the last of my brethren. This is more than fair. Jack says the last one I killed was pretending to be a doctor. Feeding on the souls of humans he was supposed to heal. You do it, too. Only you like children. Grigori picks up his sword. Who told you that? Death. Cas attacks and kills the Grigori. Drops the sword. Jack? He unties Jack. Pulls him up and hugs him.
Sam playing the game. He's stripes. Everyone is watching. Fortuna asks why they need this luck so bad? Sam says cursed by God. Dean says The God literally cursed us. She says we've met. Humans created the gods. Sort of. You prayed to the sun, the moon, the rain and the stars. At first the Creator was furious. But then he birthed us. Why? Why? Why.........to take the blame. Our bad, not his. Plus, we made for epic stories. Now, he's happy to hide behind the religion with the best syndication deal. Most gods have forgotten. But I'm old. I hold a grudge. What are you gonna do? Dean says we're going to fight him. Sam is going for the 8 ball. And sinks it. Moira says you're good. Sam says I learned from my brother. Dean says even up. Moira wants to make it interesting. You need the luck of heroes. I helped them all, I can help you, too. Double or nothing. That's how the cowboy died. Sam says deal. But not for more luck. For them. If I win, you have to let them go. When I win, you have to give back the luck you stole, close up shop. She says these losers don't matter. Sam says they matter to me. Dean says they matter to us. Moira says fine, rack em up.
She's sinking solids. All the solids. 8 ball, corner pocket. And sunk. You challenged the Goddess of Luck in her own joint. What'd you think would happen? Dean says we had to try. She says that was stupid.
They walk out. Sam says we can't just leave them. Dean says I know. Evie comes outside. She shut it down. Because of you. She thought your kid had gone extinct. Heroes, like the old days. Don't play his game. Make him play yours. She offers a coin. Leaves. It glows. Dean takes it and it glows, too. They get in the car and Baby revs right up. We're back, baby!
**Nice in the final season to revisit the old little-G gods. The ones Gabriel was friends with for centuries.
Returned home. Dean scratching a Scratcher. So much for that luck of Hercules crap. LOL. But they're back to their normal. Cas? hey. Everything okay? Jack enters. Hello. Jack? It's really him. Sam hugs the kid. Dean looks into his eyes. Looks to Cas. Jack told his story. He ate the Grigori hearts? I had to. Jack couldn't come home. If I don't stay hidden, my grandfather will try to kill me. Again. He's afraid of me. That's why we had to wait. Billie hid him in The Empty until it was safe. Jack says the hearts are just the beginning, but I'm not strong enough yet. If I follow Billie's plan, I'll get stronger and.....I'll be able to kill God.
